I'm doing an essay on gender swapping and figured that, besides just pointing to a bunch of texts, it would be nice to do a little research myself. My question is simple: Have you ever played as (and claimed to be) the other gender in an MMORPG and, if yes, why?

(No, games where you can't pick a gender don't count :P)

Any theories, opinions or experiences are appreciated, too. It would also be appreciated if you could post your gender and perhaps your age with your post, since it'll make any quotes feel more relevant. Don't worry, it's just for school, the essay isn't going anywhere else :P If you don't feel comfortable posting it, that's fine, too.

Thanks in advance,
Wolf Warhead.

I always play as women in mmorpgs, but I never claim to be one IRL.
Don't know why.

this is something I noticed a lot of people doing in my days of playing WoW, but I can't find myself doing it. I'm a male and when I play a game I like to get into my character you know feel like hes me. So, if its a female I can't feel like it's me cuz its the opposite gender.

It makes a big difference if the different genders in the game start out with different stats. In that case, being a female or male whatever could be a logical argument based on your gaming abilities and preferences, not just a choice of what you want to look like. Phantasy Star Online was like that, I don't know about some of these other games.

I thought it would be different.
It turned out to be (,) just the same.

True enough, but lets say assuming that their stats are exactly the same, would you still play the other gender for any reason?

If it looked cool :P. I don't get too hung up/personally involved in online characters, but I think it enhances the experience for some people.

Nope, don't have the habit of playing a character of the opposite sex, whether it's in an MMORPG, an RPG, or in any other situation where I'd be playing the role of a fictional character.
The only exception are the times where the canonical story dictates a female main character, although the game allows for the main character to be of either sex, as I prefer to experience the canonical story rather than an alternative one.

yeah i played as a male character on Ragnarok online. i even made a myspace for my character so that ppl would believe i was realy a guy. and they did. but then i fell in love with my best friend in game and so i admitted to all my friends and guild that i was a girl. and the guy who was my best friend in game is now my boyfriend in real life.

yeah its different to be male or female in mmorpg's. not just in how they r treated in battle but also in conversation. when i play girl character ppl r more willing to lvl with me and help me. when guy character ppl r like "noob" xD but girls r killed less in pvp ;3

Then why did you play a guy at first?
