Which games do you believe were truly overrated in comparison to what they actually turned out to be. Why do you think they were overrated?
Note: This is not designed to be a thread so people can argue each others opinions so to speak.

My most overrated games and why:
-------------------------------
Halo 3 - I played through this game and I honestly wasn't impressed. Ok yes it has nice graphics (a bit overkill on the HDR bloom effect though) but nothing honestly stood out and made the game a memorable experience. I am not saying it's bad, it's just run of the mill in my opinion.

Half-Life 2: Episode 2 - Ok before someone wants to start an argument over this, let me at least say this. I am not saying that this came was a steaming pile of shit, it just didn't meet up to the hype it was making. I made it through to the end of the episode, unsure if I would even bother getting Episode 3. The original Half-Life 2 was amazing, it is simply one of the best games I have ever played, but this episode didn't have that feel to it unfortunately.

Here's mine:

The Kingdom Hearts series: Seriously, I am sick of all the KH stuff around, there are way PS2 games out there like Metal Gear Solid 3, Ratchet & Clank, Okami, Jak II, or God of War. Plus the series has one of the worst fandoms since Final Fantasy, Halo or Super Smash Bros. And the characters look nothing special or cool.

Final Fantasy after VI: FFVII was great, but it gets too much hype, FFVIII and FFIX were okay, but the series became overrated when SquareSoft and Enix decided to merge. Plus there are better RPGs out there, and the character design for the newer FFs suck in my opinion.

Metroid for the NES: (oh boy, there's going to alot people flaming me for this) I wanted to like this game, but it keeps handing my ass. Even I thought Contra, Mega Man, and Ninja Gaiden were easier games. I can't get past Kraid because of the cheap enemies (Those bees are the most annoying enemy in a NES game since those damned Medusa Heads in Castlevania)

Any Sonic after the Genesis era: In my opinion, Sonic doesn't translate well into 3D, plus Sonic Adventure 1 or 2 wasn't the best Sonic. Sonic 2, Sonic CD or Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best one.

Halo series: I do like the games, but they get too much hype than it deserves.

GTA series: Same reason with Halo.

Madden or any sports game in general: They are the same damn game every year, just with an updated roster. Yawn, give me something new or exciting.

Also for sports game: What I best describe is from the words of Beast Wars Megatron "Different packaging, same product. Loser."

HERE I GO:

Most of the Pokemon Games: Almost all the games for Gameboy and DS are practically the same. You start with a pokemon, train them, defeat Team (insert team here), beat the elite four, slaughter weak trainers. The only difference is that there are new pokemon, which most of them sucked after the second generation. (except cacnea, hence the name).

Halo (any): This is an excellent game if you are bored, have a bunch of friends over, and like explosions. But I would never take the time to go through the storylines on a fps like that.

Any Kingdom Hearts after the first.: The game was decent... then they came out with another one... And another one... and soon to be another one. Too much like Final Fantasy.

- Halo series: Very good games, don't get me wrong, but they don't really deserve all the hype
- God of War series: well most people already know I think this is one of the most boring and dull games in history
- GTA III and spinoffs: very good games, but did we really need 5 of them?
- Motorstorm: I just plain out hated it

My first Metroid game was Super Metroid, and I can never go back and play the original after being "spoiled" by the newer games. Moving so slowly gives me a headache.

Any game that was given the highest score on a rating scale, or was called "the best" in anything.

Seriously, after a certain objective point, game ratings are based completely on preference. I could say something like Halo sucks because I dislike how it works, the graphical style, or the voices, but really, that probably won't stop it from having no outright flaws. Nitpicks don't count.

Also, a lot of it is based on hype. It doesn't matter how good a game is, too much hype will make ANY game a disappointment, and thus "overrated". However, there are some games which objectively get too much hype and can be called overrated in this sense. For starters, Mario, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, Halo.

Hell, any popular series that people immediately mention when the word "video games" comes up.
