I started reading the Kite Runner last night, and of course this is after hearing 1 million and one good things about the book. Well, I could only get through about the first 10 pages before I had to put it down. I know a lot of people love this book but, I have to be honest, Hosseini's writing style SUCKS. It is absolutely juvenile; by the time he wrote the oh so cliche, "If the eyes are the window to the soul...." I was ready to throw the damn thing out the window.
So now I have a dilemma, can so many people be wrong about this book? Am I being unfair after only a handful of pages? Does the writing improve as the book goes along? Is the story compelling enough for me to keep going despite the crappy prose? Is it worth it to keep going?
So you haven't read any of it yet? I might try a few more pages but, yeesh, it really was hard to read- and by that I do not mean it was hard to understand.
I like the book. Though I have to admit the way everything just happened to be so coincidental was pretty bland for me. I think the book is juvenile myself, but I liked the plot.
My English teacher has the same opinion about the book with you. She said that the writing was simple and bland. (She also knew the author)
To answer some of your questions: I don't think the writing improves and you are not being unfair about your judgments.
the thing about the book is you dont get it until you finish it which is what compelled me to read it i couldnt stand not understanding! his style is very simple and maybe a bit cliche... but it does get better... you'll have to read and see

Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you're good is like expecting the bull not to charge because you're a vegetarian...
I loved the book and thought the style worked well for it, but if his style doesn't work for you I wouldn't slog through it. There's plenty of books I haven't read because I couldn't stand the style.
