To make one you just need to make a 50x50 pixles picture and upload it as your icon... you do this in edit profile, not submit new deviation.

If you want to try creating your own avatar you can try searching for a tutorial explaining you how to make one FAQ #577: How do I use the main Search?



You can also try browsing in the Customization > Icons > Avatars > deviantART category to see if you can find one you like (but remember to ask if you can use them to the person that created it!).
