I'm no programmer so I don't know how this would work in practise, but tell me what you think:
Forum Mods get pretty busy I would imagine. New threads are constantly popping up. I've seen a few threads that warrant a lock, but remain open for days. I assume that the mods miss these threads, partially because they aren't being reported, and partially because the thread's title doesn't look particularly interesting / controversial.
How about implementing a system where people can flag a thread, so that it stands out in the thread list, and can catch the attention of a forum moderator? The device could be something as simple as a checkbox next to the original post, or could utilize the currently defunct post rating system. Original post gets more than five 1's? It gets flagged for the mods. Something like that. It would be best, of course, if only the mods can see which threads have been flagged, to avoid a flagged thread just attracting flamers.
I don't really know how many people would find this useful, but I'm sure it would make the mods jobs a little easier.
I like that idea... maybe an extra column next to the thread icon on the left-hand side, to display the rating of the thread. If it dips below a certain number, the rating turns red.
I suppose there would have to be a dialogue between the mods and the admins as to how it should be presented visually.
The only problem with the idea of the thread's rating "dipping below a certain number", is that there are no numbers attached to the thread to begin with, so the first person to rate a post could essentially throw up a false flag for the mods.
But I guess we don't want their job to be too easy.
I like this. If I see a thread that needs locking I try to hunt down a forum mod that's currently online, but often times my notes go unseen for a while.
Maybe even adding something in that would alert mods of threads that get flagged so they don't have to keep an eye out for the flagged threads. Sort of more like the policy violation button for deviations.
The thing I like about the idea of flagging threads is that there is only one notice per thread.
If there was an option similar to the policy violation button, the mods inboxes could potentially be flooded with notices, when it's likely that they're lurking the forums anyway, where they would see the 'flag'.
