I agree! Assemblage and collage are essentially similar.

All beans are vegetables. Chocolate is made of cocoa beans. Therefore chocolate is a vegetable. Meaning that we should all eat 5 bars every day!

Why not opposite? Why collage couldn't be a subcategory of assemblage, as it is limits to flat paper stuff pasted together? I'm quite sure someone would like to put assemblage into artisan crafts.
I am for excluding assemblage to a new cattegory to make it more visible.

You can always say that assemblage is the same as collage. Well, they are similar but not the same.
Collage are several clips pasted together and assemblage, is the three-dimensional or sculptural equivalent of Collage. You can say it's like a sub category of collage.

Maybe after viewing their work you can have a better idea of what I'm talking about
