I was recently the honored recipient of a Daily Deviation for a GreaseMonkey script which I created specifically for the deviantART site ("DeviantART - Random Love"). The script adds the "Random Deviant" and "Random Deviation" buttons to the main bar on all dA pages, and is has recieved notable attention through being awarded a DD ( Comments: 267 Favourites: 190 Total: 7,364 ) and encouraging words from a number of members of the community.

There have been a number of other members of the deviantART community who have created similar scripts to add, replace or supplement features or behaviours of the deviantART site (these resources are catalogued by =Mozilla), but alot of these features are browser-specific because the site manipulations are performed locally, on the user's computer, and as such are dependant on extensions, etc.)

What I am suggesting is that some of the more popular of these "hacks" be considered for official implementation and incorporation into the deviantART site. Consider them to be a distributed development and beta project:
  1. We, community members, see a development opportunity in the site,
  2. We build a temporary patch to implement the feature or behaviour which we think would benefit the user experience.
  3. We distribute the patch to other community members who then evaluate the improvement and either support it or discard it.
  4. If enough people support the improvement, then the code is translated from the patch into the website architecture, where it becomes available (either through a user-defined option toggle, or globally) to all users.

You have a great collection of community minded people here, many with the technical experience, background and passion to try and make these changes a reality for all. All I am suggesting is that it would be great if this site recognised these efforts to make dA a more user-friendly place and absorbed some of these changes into the native code of the site itself.

(I am sure that the review and voting system would need to be nailed down at some stage. This is just an expression of interest and concept to try and garner some community support.)

I would definately second that! There are some brilliant additions that members have spent time and effort developing that would be a brilliant part of the normal DA look, including the "next" and "Previous" links in each members gallery thats currently just an add on for Firefox users only, this would be a fantastic addition as navigating through galleries at the moment is a complete nightmare!

Would you like some cheese to go with that whine Madam?

Several already have. I believe the [ Edit ] button on journals was once a user script, as was the deviation preview.

I was actually looking the random love deviation yesterday when trying to create a similar user script myself. (no luck there :() I, however, don't think many of these scripts would be good on dA - a lot of them are designed for certain groups of people. However, an extension manager would be awesome - gives us area to activate the features we want and disable the ones we don't need.

It would be nice, if that is the case, for there to be a bit more of an open discussion about them all.
Knowing that what I work on may be used in the infrastructure of the site would encourage me to develop more toys.

Speaking of which, if you need a hand with your GM script, email me (link on my homepage) and I'll see what I can do for you.

I'd like that. We could use an official poll listing the top ten or so most used scripts, and they take the more popular ones and install them first? Even a thread in the beta forum would be awesome.

If I have problems again, I will. =stfc and `doofsmack have been covering me thus far, though. Thanks. :)

Yeah, or another way to track the usage (which I was considering using for the Random Love script) was to simply append a variable, like "&GM=RandomLove" at the end of the queries, so that the usage could be tracked through this site's logs.

But, hey, I am not 100% conversant with hos this place is actually designed, so, that would be up to the PTB to decide.

:iconj2n4me:
That would be awesome, but I'm not sure it would be very handy for anything other than being interesting, such as the [stats page].

hey, you could add the logging feature and make the amount of randoms clicked displayed on that page too
