I've noticed that some journals are used as a sort of live blog post; edited often to add content. So, why not introduce edit summaries for journal entries?
Basically, this would be a little text entry box next to the "This edit is minor and won't notify my watchers" box. When the box is unchecked, the entry box could optionally be used to fill in a short summary of edits to the post, which would then be shown in the message the watchers get (instead of the first x chars of the journal). This would help watchers see what was actually edited, rather than having to re-read the entire post just to find new edits.
That sounds interesting, I have to say.. It would be cool if it kept the message too, perhaps, but I suppose it's not too much work to keep stating the same.
However, it's still somewhat different from what I was suggesting here; putting an edit summary in would imply storing it somewhere else, perhaps including a list of them somewhere. In that case, putting them all in the description may be impractical, as the length of a message preview in the message center is limited.

Any thoughts?
