I have been a Deviant for a long time. I have just recently really become active on the site and feel it is one of, if not the best art community on the web. My complaint is as an artist who enjoys drawing the human form. With that in mind the following is my complaint.
I will use DA to search for photos, artistic nudes in nature that I can draw to help further my art abilities. The problem I run into is that amount of, well to be honest porn that I come across. I am no prude, I know that people enjoy it, but it does have a negative effect on my coming here for inspiration. I report the deviations as I find them and they eventually they are taken down, while this is a good thing, I think it could be done much easier with more community involvement in the process. Please see my suggestions below.
1. Community moderators, trusted members of the community who see the incoming “Mature” flagged images and based on the set rules determine whether they meet DA standards for posting or if there are outside of the rules and need to be declined. They could then be declined and the person would receive a message explaining why with a process for appeal. 2. A Ranking system for those who post mature material on a regular basis. That is, if MJ Ranum for example were posting, his trust rating is going to be extremely high because his images are not in any way pornography, they are artistic nudes within the rules of DA. After a time/number of entries approved, you would no longer require they to be approved at all. With that in mind, if they had an image reported for pornographic reasons and it was found that it was in fact against the terms, they would lose a large portion of their trust value and have to work to get it back. 3. If you are declined to many images, the possibility for you to lose the ability to upload mature content could be placed into effect thus punishing repeat offenders with the possibility of a ban. Eventually it would be difficult for those with new accounts to post anything either as the moderators would be able to nip them in the bud as they came in.
I believe this would deter those who think it is funny to post these things without any fear. This could also help to make the artistic nudes sections more about the art. I am fully willing to discuss this in depth with anyone who would like to discuss it.
1. Community moderators -- Do you mean community volunteers, the people with ^ in front of their names? I was one up until the end of my term last semester, and we have nothing to do with the removal of deviations or reports. It's a legal issue. ESPECIALLY when it comes to pornographic materials - that is even more complicated than the rest of dA galleries because it's sexual in nature, pornographic often, and can involve COPPA issues. They HAVE to have fully paid staff dealing with all reports, but especially the pornographic ones, which I believe there are specific staff members who deal with just those.
2. I really hate all ranking systems. Ranking systems in the past here have failed miserably. Someone who posts porn would easily get a golden rating, because people love porn. Besides, there's no reason the public needs to rate and judge and see these ranks. The staff can see someone's history for posting porn, and that's what matters.
3. This would just lead to people posting miscats. Besides, in reality, if someone is posting porn constantly they'll just be banned plain and simple.
There is already an "Erotic Nudes" section within photography - anything that is 'pornographic' but doesn't break TOS should go there.
Maybe we need a system whereby if we think something is in the wrong category we can mark it as belonging in such-and-such category, and tag it that way - if enough people tag an entry as being in the wrong category, then the mods can take a look and move it if appropriate.
I completely agree with #3. I had suggested before (not on a topic here) that there should be a single category for some of these types of pictures, such as 'erotic' and everything should be pushed into that category regardless of how the submitter feels about it. Failure to do so results in banning or deletion. Like you, I'm not going to try and say nudity shouldnt be on the site I enjoy drawing to but gross self-pics of a narly penis or a narly vag isn't appropriate for the main galleries of the site regardless of what word people use to describe them.
The problem I am seeing is that many people will say "Oh that isn't porn, I have seen much worse". Just because it not porn does not automatically qualify it as "Artistic Nude" either. A full frontal shot of a woman in front of a dirty mirror with her iphone, not really all that artistic, is it a self portrait sure, is it a nude, partially so, is it art, no, no it is not...
I've really never seen this in the nude stock galleries. I'll admit that's the only place I look. I've seen some pretty bad photography, but not TOS-violating porn.
