Suggested/Recommended Art Feature

:iconrhaenon:
The new awesome More Like This functionality has lead me to some great artwork. Still, I feel like we could use this functionality:

Recommended/Suggested Art: This could be a feature that would take your collection of favourites and do something similar to more like this, enabling you to find similar art. Also, it could display images from the same genre.

Just a quick suggestion.

We already have the feature that you're describing. It's the original "More Like This" (MLT) feature that's been available for quite some time. The only thing that is "new" about the recent update to "More Like This" is that DA has added six MLT thumbs right next to the deviations on individual deviation pages. (There used to be only a "More Like This" button on individual deviation pages to click on.) Clicking on one of those newly added thumbs simply takes you directly to that single thumb's deviation page, leaving the deviation behind that you were looking at.

"More Like This" has so much more to offer without adding distracting thumbs to everyone's deviation pages. On any page displaying thumbs (e.g., search/browse results, Galleries, Favorites, Collections) simply hover your mouse pointer at the bottom of any thumb and you'll get the "More Like This" bar. Click on it to go to the "More Like This" Browse page.

The default view is sorted by Relevance Only with the "base" picture you selected placed at the top, so at the beginning of the results you may see lots of pictures by the same artist who created the base picture if the artist is popular and creates lots of similar pictures of the same type and the same quality because lots of people Fave and Collect more than just one of that artist's pictures.

If you don't like the "Scroll through pages" default Paging Style, scroll once to the bottom of the first page full of thumbs and you'll see an icon on the far right side of the screen that looks like a gear. Click on it for a drop-down menu that allows you to change to "Click through pages." You can also change the number of thumbs that appear per page using this menu. If you've looked at several rows of thumbs and you wish to use different criteria for your MLT search based on your originally selected picture, return to where your "base" picture is displayed by using your Top of Screen control keys (it's Command + Up Arrow for a Mac; I've forgotten what the Windows keys are). Or if you wish to select a NEW base picture from any of the thumbs that resulted from your first search, simply hover on the bottom of the new thumb and click on the "More Like This" bar to start a new search on that thumb.

To see results from a variety of artists, click on "Artists" on the top left side of the "More Like This" Browse page. A few thumbs appear for each different Artist. If there are more to be seen for that artist, there's a "More" link available. Click on one of the thumbs to view its deviation page. Use your back button to return to the results.

To see a variety of Collections where the "base" deviation has already been added, select "Collections" instead of "Artist" or "Relevance Only." Or to narrow down your search, you can select one of the "Categories" from the top left of the "More Like This" Browse Page.

The "More Like This" feature in its original format created a great way to search for paintings, drawings, photographs, tutorials, stock photos, etc., related to another one that you loved, either by the same artist or by other artists, without disrupting the quality and purpose of an individual artist's own work on his or her own deviation page.

If you just want things in a similar genre, you can just browse artwork by genre.

Well you would have to choose Digital/Traditional first.

Recommended/Suggested art is a feature that we've had for a while: [link]
And More Like This is meant to show you things the system thinks are similar in many different ways.

But Discover doesn't really suggest related or similar artwork, in my own personal opinion.

Yes it does. It's like TiVo. The more you use it, the more it picks up on what you like and makes better suggestions.
