In the Browse Art section there are tabs to search for Newest and 6 tabs for most popular. There are many shoppers that specifically search for under appreciated, un-noticed or new artists. I would like to suggest a tab for searching for artists with a certain amount of views or exposure I.E. Prints with 0-100 views, Prints with 100-500 views, Prints with 500-1000 etc. Giving dA a chance to increase their profit as well as giving exposure to artists who go unseen. Many of us artists don't have time for the whole social networking grind and this would give shoppers a chance to find fresh new art and artists a chance to be seen.
Please don't take this the wrong way but, I'm speaking as a person who is trying to sell prints. Someone who isn't selling prints wouldn't understand the point I'm trying to convey. As an artist trying to sell art I think it's very necessary.
So, take the time to social network. You can't expect people in real life to find you without any interaction (whether it be word of mouth, interacting with potential clients, etc), so why expect it here? You have to put yourself out there YOURSELF.
Besides, there are plenty of "prints" that probably have low view counts. People new to the site might accidentally turn on prints without realizing it (since dA encourages the user to), not to mention a bunch of other random prints that aren't really print-quality.
Dear, I do... Out the wazoo, I do everything but beg people to look at my work but, frankly I don't like begging nor do I like spend 99% of my time socializing when I could be working. Many people don't know how to network, nor are they very social - is that their fault? Artists are artists - it's not a social practice. When I am working on a digital piece I can't talk and work at the same time. When someone is painting they can't talk and paint at the same time.
If the high sellers are getting promoted FOR FREE then why can't the ones struggling to rise get some kind of notice as well? It's not asking for much. I spend the bulk of my day networking - I have prints that have only been viewed less than 100 times and have been up for years. Same with many other artists. Does this mean I'm asking for a handout? No. Does it mean I'm not trying? No. Does it mean I'm lazy and don't want to put any effort into it? No. But, I can't force someone to view my work and sometimes a little helping hand like 3 simple links and an inclusion to the search engine works miracles. Especially when you're a cancer patient and trying to put food on the table like myself. When the highest sellers are being promoted with a View The Highest Sellers link then why would anyone want to look any further? Furthermore, there are buyers of fine art that are looking for fresh, new artists. Struggling artists. How can these artists be found if there is no way to search for them?
As for the other random prints that aren't really print quality? Hmmm, isn't that the case now? If someone wants to buy their low quality print then they should be entitled to. Who is to say what art is and is not? This is an artist community after all and if they want to put it up for sale then they would be entitled to, especially since dA encourages them to.
How would you know what I am and am not doing? Did you comment on this thread just to be rude? What would you know about selling prints when you don't even sell prints?! It's like telling telling a biologist how to do their job just because you own a microscope.
It's not about selling the prints; it's about getting more traffic to your work so that people will be interested in it.
I can't speak for you in real life, but from your activity on deviantART, you don't appear to be doing that much to get yourself noticed. Have you tried getting involved in groups, doing thumbshares, giving thoughtful comments to others so they may come back to your art? You don't have that many forum posts or comments, so you don't seem like you actively invest in deviantART.
Because this website is so vast, and there's so many deviations and prints available, you have to put something in to get something out of it. You have to get yourself noticed, and no improved search feature based on deviation/prints views is going to do that.
