I get really annoyed with the fact that when you buy points it's 80 points to the dollar but when you use the commission widget or something similar the points suddenly turn into 100 points to the dollar. Why is that? Wouldn't it just be easier to make points be worth the same thing no matter what?
I haven't used the Commission Widget, but I also assume it's because of the 20% royalty deviantART takes from the commissions. So of the 100, the seller makes 80 ($1) and dA makes 20 ($0.25). Sure, it's kind-of a put-off to the buyer, but hey, dA's just trying to make money off of everyone.
When buying, spending, or receiving points, the cash value for those points always remains the same. It doesn't matter whether you're buying a DA premium membership, buying a DA t-shirt from the DA Shop, buying or selling an art print through the DA Print Shop, buying or selling a commission via the Commissions widget, or buying or selling a points commission via a direct private transaction between artist and buyer - 80 points always equals $1.00 and 100 points always equals $1.25. The cost of 100 points never equals $1.00.
If an artist wishes to receive $1.00 for an art commission via the Commissions widget, he or she will need to price the commission at $1.25 (100 points). The artist's 80% commission will be $1.00; DA's 20% fee will be $0.25. If the artist wants to receive $10.00 for the work, he or she will need to price the commission at $12.50 (1000 points). The artist's 80% commission will be $10.00; DA's 20% fee will be $2.50.
Here's a few common amounts: 10 points = $0.125 (12-1/2 cents) - 0.125 x 80 = 10 20 points = $0.25 - .25 x 80 = 20 80 points = $1.00 - 1 x 80 = 80 100 points = $1.25 - 1.25 x 80 = 100 400 points = $5.00 - 5 x 80 = 400
Common Usage Examples: Premium Membership: Cash Price = $29.95, Points Price = 2396 points (29.95 x 80 = 2396) Sample 12x18 Art Print: Cash Price = $19.99, Points Price = 1600 points (19.99 x 80 = 1599.2; DA rounds to 1600) DA T-Shirt: Cash Price = $18.00, Points Price = 1440 points (18 x 80 = 1440)
Sample - Commission via Widget: Cash Price = $50.00, Points Price = 4000 points (50 x 80 = 4000) Buyer's cost to purchase 4000 points = $50.00 *Artist's 80% Earnings from $50 Commission = $40.00 or 3200 points (40 x 80 = 3200) *DA's 20% Fee from $50 Commission = $10.00 or 800 points (10 x 80 = 800) $40 + $10 = $50.00 and 3200 points + 800 points = 4000 points Artist can choose to receive 3200 in points (equivalent cash value when purchasing with points = $40) Artist can choose to receive $40 by DA check Artist can choose to receive $40 via PayPal (PayPal may charge an additional transaction fee)
It's the same as 100 = $1 and when getting commission it being 120 = $1. The basic is still the same. It can still be 80 = $1 but then the cut goes from the seller's pocket. It's not that hard.
From my understanding, people are making 100 points = $1 now because of the cut dA takes with the widget. Since they take 20%, artists are bumping up their prices 20% so that they don't lose any money.
Yeah I hear a lot of people doing that. It just annoys me that if you buy points you only get 80 to a dollar but when people buy something from you on DA it's suddenly 100 points to a dollar.
