Hi all!

I'm trying to understand how the search engine works, and failing miserabily. I'm guessing the search function is not exactly a key feature of the website, but since it's implemented, at least it could work better.

I'm searching for example for a picture of a merchant, hence, typing "Merchant" in the search box, and putting the category 'Fantasy'. First images coming up are indeed merchant, and titled as such, but quickly i'm having weird pictures coming up, and i'm not exactly comprehending why they actually are in the result, for example :

And after those i'm seeing again pictures named Merchant who actually are the kind of pictures i'm looking for : What gives?

Beautiful images for sure, but definitely not what i'm searching. Since deviations named merchants are already of a wise variety, why include others not relevant at all?

Of course this goes for a lot of other things (I also searched for "Shield" and was in for a treat).

Is there any way that the search could be better? Also, any way to have more possibilies for the search, like exclusions, terms, etc (because for the shield example i had about 9 out of 10 deviations being Zelda's Shield. Again, not judging, but not what i was expecting).

Apart for this little thing, still a very nice place to be!

Would it be possible to have the search searching only in title then??

For deviations, instead of searching with a term, try searching with

title:term
e.g. [link]

Similarly, in order to search for deviations whose description/keywords contain the term, use
description:term
keywords:term

Here are a few more:
For deviations,
attribute:print to find art that's available for print

For groups,
name:term
tagline:term
description:term

For forum threads,
subject:term
body:term
status:open to only find open threads
status:closed to only find closed threads

FYI, these are subject to change as we try to improve the search engine.

This information on searching title, tags and description is just what I was looking for - I had always been frustrated by the lumping of all three together in searches, bring up irrelevant results. A great improvement.

Can this be added in FAQ #577: How do I use the Search?
That would help a lot I suppose. Or update that as well?

Awesome :boogie:
But could you give an example of  QUERY sort:time order:asc

 I tried  Emoticon max_age:2w sort:time order:asc  ( [link] )  but it doesn't work :noes:

Oops, my bad. "order:asc" part was previously used internally but is no longer supported. Sorry, I should've double checked them all :(

I'll go bug $ewm tomorrow to have that entry removed...
