Stricter Moderation- Traditional Art/Collage (dA's new dumping ground)

:iconopiumtraum:
Sort of both suggestion & complaint- the Traditional Art/Collage category has become a dumping ground for all kinds of crap, neither traditional (tons of digital & photographic stuff) nor collage- lots of snap shots & sketchbook "work". Moderating the category at this point would probably be a full time job. But as an artist who sometimes does collage work...the category has become a huge disappointment. It'd be great if members had enough brains to post to the correct category (obviously, they don't)- but as that seems to not be the case, it'd be nice if an administrator helped get images to where they belong.
Thanks.

I think a comprehensive mandatory tutorial on categories would be more helpful. They're very confusing, especially if you're unsure what medium your work is considered or have trouble reading. People don't want to put it in scraps where it won't be seen just because they can't figure out where it goes. In the meantime, why not help people (and mods) by kindly suggesting a more fit category to the artists?

I guess the problem is the moderators can't catch everything that's put into the wrong category, given the sheer volume of uploads, so you can suggest to the artist that it be put in the correct category, or as ^RockstarVanity suggested, report it. I don't think you would ever have enough volunteers to fully police galleries. :)

same problem with assemblage category
I post this on misplaced deviations - you can copy and borrow any part of this: (fill in blanks with category)

Oops! Your deviation got put in the ________category probably by mistake, that happens a lot in DAland. You might want to take the time to move it into the prpper category where it will get the maximum appreciation and feedback. This is very nice work, but it is not an __________.
Here are some links to help you move your deviation to a better category.

***how to change the category of your deviation: (you probably already know this, but just in case)

click on the deviation in your 'newest deviations' gallery
click on 'edit deviation'
click on category > 'choose', and search for the category you want
click on 'save changes' at the bottom of the page

You can report things that are in the wrong category. When you click the Report Deviation link on any deviation page, all you need to do is select Misplaced Deviation from the options that appear. You can even suggest which category you think the deviation should be in :aww:

You could also have a chat with one of the Community Volunteers for Traditional Art (you can find a list of who looks after which gallery here) about your concerns and ask if there's anything you can do to help spread the word about what does belong in the Collage category. It might be something that could be covered as part of #projecteducate or #ArtHistoryProject in the future.

It's really frustrating when people keep posting things in the wrong place (I look after Photography > Darkroom and often find random Muro drawings in there for some as yet unknown reason!) but as you said, actually moderating categories in an ongoing way would be a full time job. The best way to help is often to get the correct information out there as visibly as possible and share your knowledge and experience, especially when you're working within a category that is often misunderstood.

It's the same as when a new contest category is opened, people flooding it with useless stuff unfortunately.
