I know we have DevMeets etc but I want to find artists on DeviantArt near me - surely we could have a system where we could type in our postcodes of something.
The old longitude/latitude system is how I met my best friend and how she met her old boyfriend (now they're just great friends). I had seen her art on dA before we took an art class together. Near the end of the semester I realized who she was and went out of my way to talk to her. I'm sure some bad things must have happened due to people's access to the "deviants near me" feature, but there were some great things happening too. These days it seems like facebook is far more intimidating/stalker friendly than dA ever was and it seems like people have gotten better with managing their chosen level of privacy as well. Maybe an updated longitude/latitude system could be brought back with some added privacy options. If we're really concerned with teens/kids, maybe it could be made only for people 18 and over.
I agree! Add a feature where it searches us by zip, but only displays artists in the area down to a 50 mile radius (to keep people from pinpointing someone's location)
The system where we used to enter our longitude and latitude had obvious safety issues because it involved our precise coordinates (even though these were not displayed, the information could be trianglated because people were displayed in order of how near they were). A system using postcodes would have the same problem, as this can pinpoint someone to within the space of a few houses in many cases.
However, I see no issue with the ability to seek artists in a more general way by country, among other factors like speciality... where their names are ordered alphabetically, or by some other means that makes it impossible to determine their precise location.
I remember a long time ago there was a 'deviants near me' thing but they removed it because of privacy. I think the best you'll really get is joining location based groups and such
