This is something that came to mind recently. I don't like music that much but many people see music as an art form. Having a music section would attract new users and give something for existing users to try and enjoy. It would open the door to people without musical talents and copycats, but it could bring talent by undiscovered artists as well. Music can inspire artists and deviantart should take advantage of this.
There's an easy workaround to this. Make a flash player and upload it in the flash>interactive category. It's not against the rules to include music in your flash movies, specially when it's music made by you. Since you own the rights to said music, DeviantArt has no reason for not allowing this.
Bad Idea, DeviantArt would need elite lawyers, because all the teenies would think "OMG I have to make music too" and just flood DA with some crappy covers from Lady Gaga or Alicia Keys and so on... Wannabes all over would load their crap from youtube on here...no thanks.
The staff can barely handle the art-stuff with their thieves and trolls and then music, I don't know There are propably better sites for it ....
I've often thought it'd be a great idea, but for a lot of the reasons already listed it's not exactly worth even trying if possible when you really add it all together.
dA stated in the past that they don't want to get into the music scene because the copyright issues surrounding it are a nightmare, and frankly, too much for staff to handle. They have a hard enough time as it is just with pictures. They know people want to submit it, but they regrettably won't be supporting music on dA. There are more than plenty other sites that are perfect for independent music, so I would suggest people use those.
Licensing should not be arbitrarily forced on musicians or any other kind of artist. It is not better than nothing and they do have more options than nothing. As I said, there are many other sites that cater to independent musicians already.
