Recently I have noticed an enormous upheaval of negative feed back on your 'site updates' that are vastly ignored. These 'updates' as you call them are rapidly becoming increasingly trivial and ridiculous. They have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that there are problems with this site and do nothing to address or solve said problems. In fact, they are only adding to and exacerbating these problems exponentially. Therefore, I have something to say, and since my membership was actually paid for it's time to expect that my voice is heard and you do something with what I have to say.
Your newer thumbnails are cumbersome and unnecessary, and on an aesthetic level do not fit the overall minimalistic air of the site itself. They also cause a large hindrance on one's computer and cause large problems with lag that is not the fault of machinery specifications, but your programming. Please revert to the original thumbnail images.
Second: How dare you remove the "Notify me upon resolution" function of reporting deviations! If I report a deviation, or send a ticket to the help desk, I demand that I be notified when the problem I have noticed is resolved. Bring back the resolution notifications. Now. If I am not notified, my solution is simple: I check back after 7 business days with a ticket to the help desk demanding that I receive updates on my support inquiries. I submitted them, therefore I have a right to receive updates when I please, and you are obligated to provide said feedback.
You need to stop tinkering with your site, and fulfill your duties. These tiny little updates are merely patches to keep the masses distracted from the fact that deviantART is the one of the largest sites on the internet for DCMA infringement.
It's nice that you are willing to give the option to block birthday notifications, however myself and probably ten thousand other users would like the ability to disable favorites notificationsas well. Seeing as a lot of people were crying about not wanting to get birthday notifications, you are more than capable of giving us the option to disable favorites updates whenever somebody hits that button. Get rid of the sharing options. If people are too computer illiterate to copy and paste a link, then so be it. They should go back to school and stop complaining. We don't need people on fucking facebook, twitter, stumble-upon, and god-knows-what-else seeing out artwork. Doing that is just practically condoning DCMA infringement, and you all can get sued like you nearly did with that huge fiasco a few months back. Your chat network states when you create a new channel at the bottom that, quote, "Channels that are unused for two weeks will be removed." I have deliberately left at least two of the channels that I created unused for about a year and a half now, and they have not been removed. I would like to see the staff do what they say they will on the chat. Remove channels that are owned by banned/deactivated users, and provide users who create their own channels the option to delete a channel after a given period of time. You do this with groups, so it can't be that hard, can it? Have a both a volunteer and a staff member in the Help channel at all times. I am personally tired of having issues and going to the help channel for assistance, and finding your @MNBot in the channel all of the time. Also, I believe that the channel for 'help' should be opened so that guests are allowed to provide help to other users, seeing as I have, on many occasions provided information in the Help channel that your community volunteers do not think of or refuse to give. Stop giving users a run-around. It's annoying, and I view it as harassment if I get the run-around from staff. Delete deactivated and banned users, and give users who wish to leave the community the option to permanently delete their account. I honestly don't see the huge deal with this, seriously common suggestion. Provide a method to search a user's favorites, and to search a user on the site. This is pretty much self-explanitory. Give us the ability to see our own poll results without voting. The purpose of a poll is to be objective, and putting your own opinion in there isn't objective, is it? I mean, seriously. That's just stupid. Make premium memberships free HERE'S A NEW ONE! Your premium memberships are shit. I'm not going to be afraid to say it. Mine was gifted to me as a christmas gift, and honestly it sucks. So what...I can add a bunch of shit to make my profile to make it flashy, I can post thumbs in my journal(something that regular members should be able to do, anyways), and I get a whole 8 percent return whenever I sell something through you guys! Why not give people a real incentive to want a premium membership. Make beta testing free. You're making people pay to test things that you're too damned lazy to test yourself? Really? You don't even listen to their opinions anyways, so why pay for it if you just go and do your own things. It's like congress, except...no...wait, they're about the same. Strict etiquette guidelines for community Volunteers. I can't tell you how many times on the Chat Channel and in my own notes I've been the victim of unprovoked harassment by your volunteers.
In fact, combine the Beta Testers and Volunteers bit: Make beta testing free, and make volunteering a paid-for membership. Volunteers are paid too damn much for what they don't do.
Make usernames available again if a premium user changes their username. It's about time you listened to the screaming and hollering of people on that, but that move was seriously not well thought-out. Mass deletion of deviations. Oh, big deal. So people want to delete more than one deviation at a time. Wait...that is a big deal! And hey...you guys are capable of letting us store en mass, so why not allow us to delete?
And yes, some of these are common suggestions, but there of course, is a simple solution that you can use if you want: If you don't want common suggestions anymore, something about what people suggest rather than blow it off.
Other than the common suggestions, these are serious issues with this site that need to be fixed, implemented, and taken care of, not patched and ignored. Take care of it.
mass deletion would be nice for deviations. it makes photoshop easier. and honestly yeah so many of the premium membership features sucked. all I got was the chance to annoy people with polls, and make pretty journals. half the time I wasn't on this account and don't get me started on the admins. they do a shitty job with protecting us and our work but hey it;s only cuz we don't keep handing them our hard earned money
They also cause a large hindrance on one's computer and cause large problems with lag that is not the fault of machinery specifications, but your programming. Average browser CPU usage before big thumbnails: ~20% Average browser CPU usage now: ~20%. In both cases, 20% thanks primarily to facebook, google+ and youtube. Loading time is currently as fast as before (with exclusion of time it takes to transfer 220kB of extra data per page due to larger thumbnails). Currently, the thumbnail actually gives one a brief preview of an artwork. So that's a no for old thumbnails.
Provide a method to search a user's favorites, and to search a user on the site. Speaking of this, I figure 'common favs' and 'friends/watchers in common' options couldn't hurt too much.
I'm all for focusing on tightening core features and behind the scenes stuff. However, I don't think dA's current structure supports that well.
That said, maybe you should do some research into why a lot of these will never be implemented, or haven't been done yet. I agree with a few of these, but absolutely not with your tone. Get off that high horse and open a reasonable dialogue, and for fuck's sake, look into the history of the site.
* Fav notices: yeah, seriously. * Sharing options: what? No. How the fuck would that stop them * Channels: that's dumb of staff. * #help: I suggested this, but there's some silly stuff with how the volunteers work. Frankly they need more base expectations. * 'run around': needs explanation. * Delete users: I know this has been explained repeatedly. Ask a staff member. They really should archive it somewhere easy to find, though. * Search users/favs: I think for users, Google would work. I'd like favsearch and I do vaguely remember it's in the works. * Polls: my workaround is to create an extra option and then delete it once I've voted. * Free memberships: if they suck, then people shouldn't want them anyway. If you want to suggest awesome paid features, maybe you should actually do that instead of coming up with something ridiculous. * Beta testing: you do realize some of those features are paid only? * CV etiquette: I'd like to see some chat logs. Your attitude makes me sincerely doubt it's them, not you. * Volunteers: ffffffffffffffffffffffffffff * Usernames: Do you not understand how username changes work? Reread that update. * Mass deletion: Hackers.
People always like to bitch about change, and the thing is they usually think that there is a "enormous upheaval of negative feed back", simply because the vocal minority is just that vocal, because the majority of users are fine with it, but aren't screaming about how fine they are with it. It's like when you're an alcoholic and you think everyone drinks a shit ton because everyone you hang around with drinks a shit ton, that just means that you have a skewed perspective based on your closed version of reality.
You've been here, what, a year. Change happens, get over it. Move forward or get left behind.
Am I the only one who noticed the great contradiction of "since my membership was actually paid for it's time to expect that my voice is heard" with "Mine was gifted to me as a christmas gift"? -
Anyway, addressing your suggestions and adding to what ^bohobella already said:
The bigger thumbnails Seriously I don't get why people complain about them, this is an ART SITE, making the thumbnails bigger just makes sense to me. I get people complain about the new, it wasn't unexpected, I just don't find any sense on it. Anyway, people will get used to them, just like with everything else. HOWEVER I do think an option to have small thumbnails could be a nice option, added to the Wall of Thumbs, Grid of Thumbs and the Full View options.
User search "This is pretty much self-explanitory. No it isn't. How do you plan to search for an user? Typing their.... username? If you already have their username then you don't need to search for them. I'll assume you mean searching for an user when you don't know their username, in which case how do you exactly suggest said search could be done?
Make premium memberships free Some already said it but this is completely out of the question, you can't expect to maintain a site as large as DA out of thin air. However making more features for premium members is something I do support.
About Beta Testing "You're making people pay to test things that you're too damned lazy to test yourself?" Well that's what Beta Testing is for! releasing a new feature to a group of users so they can test it. The admins and a very reduced group of deviants do test the new features first, that's called Alpha Testing, but in order to release the feature to the community at large it NEEDS to be tested by a larger number of individuals first (Beta Testers) to identify bugs and make corrections, it's necessary, not the admins being lazy. Making it free for everyone would beat the purpose of it, as I said the purpose of beta testing is to test the features by a small group BEFORE they're released to everyone, suggesting it should be free for everyone equals it would be available for everyone without testing which makes no sense.
The only thing I agree completely is probably "Give us the ability to see our own poll results without voting" and the ability to disable favorites notifications.
I don't like the big thumbnails because I don't like how they crop the wide stuff, and I see less things I'll potentially click on. I'd like a toggle option (similar to how Macs have the option of making icons big or small with that slider), so that people with big screens can utilize the big thumbs and people with small ones can see what they want too.
I prefer the way they crop wide images instead of seeing a tiny icon which you really can't tell what is, but to each their own. And yes something like that would be nice
