Maturity levels: anyone, mild, MODERATE, mature

After a conversation with an acquaintance in the past few days, I've just now hit upon an idea. In the submit deviation screen, we all know the maturity level how it allows for None, Warning, Strict. I was thinking, maybe they should have a none-mild-moderate-strict system. Seeing life in black and white, there is strict and none, respectively. There is one shade of grey, and that is the mild warning. Maybe we should have that second shade of grey which is moderate. The moderate warning is similar to the strict warning, except for the fact that it restricts a deviation to someone who is at least fifteen instead of eighteen. I've always wondered why there was a PG13+ and an R18+ but no M15+. If this doesn't seem like much of a suggestion, I'm cool with that. If this idea seems comparable to a house atop a volcano and you don't want anything to do with it, then don't confront me about my opinion, otherwise you won't get a reply from me.

Yea they need to allow access to all kinds of art regardless of the content I'm sixteen and there's nothing on DA that I haven't seen already.

Agreed. I do not want to see topless fat ladies on the front page.

Sounds cool. I imagine if it's rated for anyone, though, it'll mean no displaying a warning. Or, the user can have it in their preferences, if they so wish.

I just hope that it won't be a Premium feature.

Well, I like your idea of three levels. However, I get the impression many people are confused about how to use the deviantART maturity levels, so I think they shouldn't give an option of choosing the maturity level. Instead, a list of tick boxes asking about any mature content in the deviation. For example:

"Does this deviation contain strong language?"
"Does this deviation contain excessive violence?"
"Does this deviation contain nudity of any kind?"

And so on. As you ticked each box, it would ask for the severity of each aspect; like "How severe is the language in the deviation?" and once the artist had given their assessment of the deviation's maturity, the maturity level (Mild, medium, mature) would be generated by computer algorithm based on the artist's assessment. The artist would be asked if they agree or disagree with the computer's decision, if they disagree then they can submit a ticket saying why and then deviantART staff can make a decision upon that.

I realise this would be costly, perhaps a waste of resources and time but frankly, this site is used by U18's a hell of a lot more (myself included) and even with Mature Content Filter on, you still get the 'artistic nude' photos on the homepage. I find them quite jarring and detract from the experience. If deviantART isn't prepared to take this seriously enough, why should every other place that sells and displays age-restricted content have to follow suit?

I like this idea! I wonder if there would be a scale of 1-10 type for each item or for the deviation itself...

Maybe 1-5? 10 is a bit too many and people will just choose 6/7/8s without really thinking it through :)

Maybe... we should have fifty shades of grey on our maturity levels :sarcasm:

As others have suggested too, a more specified filter might be more useful. The dA site is pretty international, and views on what's acceptable differ from country to country. For example gore is frowned upon in mine, but nobody is scared if nipples. Artistic nudes in museums are perfectly appropriate for children to see.

So I'd like to be able to turn of different kinds of mature content - nudes: yes, gore: no, politically/ideologically sensitive stuff: no (if you're caught looking at an artistic nude on a public PC over here, nobody will give it a second thought. Swastikas? Those can get you into lots of trouble...) - and so on.
