A poster is any piece of printed paper designed to be attached to a wall or vertical surface. Typically posters include both textual and graphic elements, although a poster may be either wholly graphical or wholly textual. Posters are designed to be both eye-catching and convey information. Posters may be used for many purposes, and they are a frequent tool of advertisers (particularly of events, musicians and films), propagandists, protestors and other groups trying to communicate a message. Posters are also used for reproductions of artwork, particularly famous works, and are generally low-cost compared to original artwork. Another type of poster are educational posters, which may be about a particular subject for educational purposes. Many people also collect posters, and some famous posters have themselves become quite valuable, collectors and vintage posters are usually framed and matted. Posters may be any size.

So much good art, so many mixed and scattered categories. We want a poster section!

The problem is anything can be put into a poster format.

There's already an advertising category, so then you run into the problem of not knowing which one to put it in. Same with photography or anything else, practically any 2D medium can be produced as a poster, so it seems too general-a-term to use.

Noting the first paragraph of my post, you can see that a posters category would and should of course contain sub categories.

I think the artist would well enough know whether their artwork was designed for this purpose or not.

But I do understand what you are saying.

It come under Advertising.

If there aren't any rules, create one. And break it.
:iconmilktoday:
I agree. And posters aren't necessarily advertising, if people keep saying that.

You'd have to replicate a whole lot of the already existing categories, just so the artist could demonstrate their intended format of publication.

The question here is whether or not poster is just a form of publication or an art form.

Many would argue the latter.

you can design pieces to be posters that arn't for advertising. So for those I agree there should be a posters section.

And just because anything can be put on the wall as a poster doesn't mean it is a "poster". So I don't think the other categories would need to be changed.

A drawing, which then gets printed and hung as a poster.

Drawing or poster?

A photograph which is printed as a poster,

Again, photograph or poster?

The main thing is how they were created, whether it was a digital production, a photograph, a photomanipulation, a drawing, a painting etc. Whether it ends up hung somewhere because it was elected for that purpose doesn't change the nature of the work.
