Art is expression, right? A powerful expression of "maleness" is the erect penis. The relationship between a male and his penis is a complex one (yes, it really can be) and there are many concepts and emotions to be expressed that go hand in hand with the state of being male. To the female readers: think of a category that depicts naked pregnant women. This is a state of feminine beauty, mystery and power, right? The erect male penis is the same - it is the male counterpart. By banning the depiction of an erect penis, deviantArt is restricting a powerful human expression; denying males that expression.
Like all art, people can see an erect penis as portraying many things: lust, aggression, pride, celebration. Like all art, it awakens a feeling in the viewer, awakens something that is already in the viewer and might make them reflect upon themselves. There is nothing inherently *wrong* with a penis. An erect penis is not pornography. Every man has had an erect penis, many women have seen one. Why, oh why, are they banned from artistic expression?
To the practicalities: DA could have a sub-category of Artistic Nude for erect penises. Restrict access to it as much as you like, provided that people, at the end of the day, have the choice to view that category. Stop pictures in that category from being shown when people browse "All Photography", for example. Make sure only people who explicitly want to view that category can see it, and not stumble upon it by mistake.

To me an erect penis depicts sexual arousal, nothing more. Sure it happens at other times, often involuntarily, but I wouldn't consider it an expression of 'maleness' any more than I would consider a wet vagina or an erect clitoris an expression of 'femaleness'.
If you want to argue I could easily say that someone is expressing themselves through masturbation and therefore they should let that here. To most people an erection represents something sexual so it won't get on here any sooner than any other sign of arousal.

Your reaction to an erect penis is "a" reaction... it is your reaction, neither right nor wrong so it cannot be argued against. But people are denied from invoking that reaction, amongst others.

I agree, wholeheartedly. There is nothing wrong with an erect penis! DA should allow it...the things that DA does allow shock me sometimes, the violence, the gore, things like that, but I have the choice to view them or not...no one makes me click on an image to see it. The human body, male and female, in ALL it's varying states, is a BEAUTIFUL thing. An erect penis is not always sexual or pornographic, and I'm sure it would be difficult to police what is and isn't allowed. But why not just police the category itself, police the age limit of people who are allowed to view the category, but not what goes into it? Give people the choice of whether they want to click that link and open those images, but don't restrict the freedom of being able to post them here.
I believe there are many beautiful images that portray the male form, in ALL it's glory, that the DA community is forced to miss out on because of this rule. Give US the choice and freedom of whether or not we want to view them, give people the artistic freedom to post their images, drawings, their expression of the male form however they see it!

Footnote: If I feel physically and mentally ill after looking at an artist's depiction of violence, should that image be banned? I can come to DA and express graphic violence, but not the male body. This is ironic.

I think dA has enough trouble with legalities and artistic nude as it is. The debate about 'art' aside, don't make it any harder for them to run this place.
well its probably psychological damage done to the admins of the site, lets make a list of admins, past and present GD's that probably have been raped by penises.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
