Language Filter?

Dear policy-makers, :D

I have a suggestion about implementing a language filter. There are a lot of young kids on here (13 years old, at least :D) and people like me who just don't like reading that kind of thing. It's very easy around here for a well-meaning kid to accidentally read some kind of explicit journal or post without any warning at all. I like this site very much and use it pretty much every day and this is probably one of the few complaints I have. There are lots of well-meaning people who filter their words kindly for us goody-two shoes and youngun's but then again, there are those who don't...

In another popular site like Gaiaonline you have an option of turning your language filter to different levels of severity. Perhaps this or some other kind of filter can be used here. I don't know if this is a common suggestion or not (it wasn't in your common suggestion thread) so I really hope to see this used eventually in the future!

Thanks for your time.

Do words really traumatize you so much? It's not the words, but the meaning behind them, and that can never really be filtered. Sure, you can blank out all the standards, but people on the Internet are nothing if not creative. Should dA filter out words spelled in l33t? How about Chinese swear words?

Sorry, but there's really no way to keep your virgin ears clean on the Internet, and I doubt dA would try.

I don't like this idea, *insert freedom of speech argument here*.

When I was thirteen I was cussing like a sailor.

Yep, they do, it's pretty much a pet peeve of mine, and I'm allowed to have one, at least. :D And I know things would leak through, it's inevitable, but the very extremely optional filter would get rid of the bulk of things.

Which is why the filter is completely and utterly optional, just like on Gaia. :D

The thing is, on a site like this, it would be hard to blur out words like that. Like, if I wanted to say in my journal "so and so is a fucking cunt." how would it read? Would it go like "so and so is a *blank line here* *blank line here*"

I wouldn't care if someone didn't want to see me cuss, but I would care if they saw big black lines instead of my words.

Kind of like the Something Awful forums. When I first started lurking, I was all 'what the hell's a 'gently caress'? And why is everybody--oooooh.' Automatic curse filter. Changes your words.

The thing is that dA most likely isn't going to implement a filter for a very small percentage of users. The majority of people on the site either curse themselves, or are grown up enough to take a few bad words. Hell, some of the Admins swear in their journals. I would say your best option is to find a content-filtering extension for your web browser. I know there are some for Firefox.

Fuck, I hope not. :(

That just results in fuk f00k, fu*k, f*ck, f--k, 7uck, 4uck and so forth. We all know what the person MEANT to say, so why mask it? If you're going to censor, you might as well just stop anyone submitting a message which contains anything which could be interpreted as a swear word.
