Preserving Architectural History?

After taking a trip around Los Angeles this weekend, I decided to check out some of the Frank Lloyd Wright houses in the area. The original famous home, the Hollyhock House, was pretty much unkept, but at least it was undergoing restoration. From the hill on which it stood, I gazed out to the Hollywood Hills at the Ennis-Brown House, another of Frank Lloyd Wright’s magnificent buildings. After driving up the hill (and getting lost a couple times on the way), I went up a path leading to the backyard of the concrete textile block home. Much to my dismay, the home was in total disrepair! After an earthquake about 10 years ago and the heavy rains we have had in the area, the retaining wall supporting the house on the edge of its hill seemed as though it could give way at any moment. The state of this house flooded my soul with despair. It’s a real pity that people have let such a wonderful structure decay to the point near nature induced demolition.

The Ennis-Brown House is certainly not the only endangered building in the world facing such a terrible problem. Buildings all over the world are at this very moment, on the Most Endangered Site List put out biyearly by the World Monument Fund. It stabs me with a terrible pain to think that the citizens of our world have let these magnificently designed architectural masterpieces slide slowly down the hill of destruction. Not only are buildings toppling from natural means, but day after day, wonderful works of art are destroyed to make room for tract homes and strip malls…blights on the land. People petition all over the place to save animals: endangered or not, but nowhere do I see people petitioning to save major monuments of our human history.

*Hops off soapbox* So now, I must know, am I the only one here who feels this way…that famous buildings, monuments, homes…architectural history should be preserved? And let me know why or why not.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this….=)
