It must be exiting to see when RL friends join. I've tried a couple of times myself - one of them has a profile that he visited twice, six years ago or so The other one never pulled himself together, probably because he doesn't really bother to be active on an internet site (and dA is more fun if you interact now and then). Bottom line, I have my RL social life and dA on the side for when I'm stuck by my computer. Somehow, that also suits me fine.
I'd prefer RL socializing most of the time, but dA is great when bound to the desk anyway I use it in periods - last summer I was actually on my way out, when persuaded to stay...! Now I'm kind of stuck, and that's ok - it will regulate itself eventually, and it's a fine way to have human contact on and off while working.
