Those rats

I've noticed there are a lot of rat lovers on DA.
Domesticated rats are cute, and so are mice, but I just loathe the ones that run wild.

There was a rat in my home just a few weeks ago, and it was horrible. Imagine you have an creature that is carrying billions of bacteria, running rampant and crapping in your food?? Or crapping anywhere, really.

We finally caught the rat, of course, but we did not kill it. We let it go somewhere far,far away.

I just want to ask, WHY do you actually like these things??

Domestic Rats are really sweet and are just like hamsters or any other small rodent people keep.

They have there own personalities and become very loving as they get to know you.. I've owned rats in the past and they were wonderful pets!

Domesticated rats are not my favourite creatures but I don't have a problem with them.
But if I see one of those big mutant canal rats someone near me I would scream my lungs out. The feeling would be unspeakable, I don't even wanna imagine what it would be.

They are very intelligent and some say they bond with their owners way stronger than a dog would.
I would've really loved to own one myself but can't because of quarantine for my future career..

This is why I have a cat. So she will and has brought to me the dead corpses of several.

And she doesn't stop there, that large and limber kitty of violent and obligate carnivorous nature, she would kill birds, rabbits, moles, chickmunks, squirrels, and even the indigenous and harmless fruit bats that would be about. She would have the half-eaten corpses rot at our porch. It's practically a chore to clean it all up. If anything I have an idea to feed my future cats in this manner, to get feeder mice and let them act on their hunter instincts and fashions.

So cute, these mammals are.

I am so glad you didn't kill the critter!
Some people don't seem to get that anything that is alive has just as much of a right to live as they themselves do, no matter its form or appearance.

It was okay I did everything right. But in the end we were allowed freedom to do what we wished and after seeing what people did... it wasn't so good.

We had to dissect a cow's eye. Put me off beef for a while, but I still like it.

Because they're small and fuzzy with large eyes, and they squeak. It's not that complicated.

I live in a rat-free zone where it's illegal to have pet rats. I've only ever seen one in the zoo. She was kinda cute.

A rat in a zoo? Really? That's odd. Rats can be found easily. :ohnoes: Try pet stores and sewers.

Yup, but it wasn't like put on display or anything. The zoo lady just brought it out from nowhere when we were on a tour.
They're not easily found where I live because, as I mentioned, I live in a rat-free zone. We actually have rat patrols and everything.

It's a rat-free country almost, but I haven't seen one in a long time. Still, a rat patrol? That's extreme. :stare:

Same can be said for quite a number of wild animals. Wolves and big cats are dangerous but yet they're still very popular.

Yes. I like wolves and big cats just as they are. far away from me. :/

I dislike dangerous things, and would prefer to just look at them from a far distance.

Well, I like cats, but I wouldn't want a flea ridden, toxoplasmosis bearing feral one rooting around in my kitchen. So the rat thing is no different.

Rats are actually lovely pets, they're extremely friendly and social. They're basically like little dogs. And the rats they sell as pets have been bred in captivity for about a century.

You're less likely to get a disease from a domestic rat than you are from a dog. Of course, you're MOST likely to get one from a little kid. Ick.

Anyway, this is coming from a snake owner who 'goes through' about 8 rats a month, so take that with whatever grains of salt you will.

Ok. I see that you like clean, domesticated animals as pet. Same here. I would not mind a domesticated rat, but a wild one is a different story. I would not mind others who like rats, but I prefer them to stay away.

I used to have pet rats, and they were terrible. Of course, I got them from the pet store and not from breeders like I guess you're supposed to?

I still think domesticated rats are really cute though (I just wish my experience had been better), but wild ones creep me the f*** out. I don't like the idea of anything wild running around my house. And then the dead ones laying around are even worse *shudder*

I would rather not have pets, but I got a dog, and it just clicked with me. Of course, breeders are always better than the stores :), as they have more experience.

I like having pets, but I prefer outdoor ones or small ones that are mostly kept in cages like rats and mice and hamsters and stuff. I have three cats in the house, and while they're cute, they're also kind of destructive >_<

I think I'd prefer a dog in the house to cats. Dogs don't tend to jump up on counters or get into cabinets... of course every house dog I've met was really bad about begging for food, but they might have just been spoiled.
