"Star Wars," I think. Some fandoms excel at cosplay; some tend to have lots of high-quality fan fiction and fan art; some are more fun to have discussions and debates over than others; but the "Star Wars" fandom excels at all of that.
It's a video game series that started in the late nineties, went quiet after '04 and has since started back up with HD and 3D remakes to get the funds necessary to continue the series.
It's about an alien planet (the titular Oddworld) populated by colourful, imaginative and ugly-cute (but mostly just ugly) creatures and characters, usually with a theme of irresponsible industrial practices making life hell for the resident butt-monkey natives and causing general ecological devastation. For example, in the first game you play as a slave called Abe in a meat-processing factory who stumbles upon his boss' plan to turn him and his fellow slaves into the next wave of meat products to replace the loss of revenue caused by the decline and extinction of the wild creatures. Abe has to escape, whereupon he learns of his lost cultural heritage learns how to return and save his fellows and stop his old boss. And you have to do it all without any weapons or hit points. You get a loincloth to protect your modesty and that's it. Which is kinda odd, since we've since learned from the games' creators that he probably doesn't have any genitalia, or at least none that work.
