They are souls of those trapped in limbo.
Once these charlatans sell enough of them they'll bring back the dark lords (and their rings)
and the world will be covered with darkness, and raptor jesus shall break-dance on top of it.

Everybody's buying love, you just gotta find the right buyers.

Just something you spend your money on, just because you think it's cute and you like it.

It's a viable business. I don't care about them, just like I don't care about paying $5 for a cup of coffee if I like it... it's up to individuals to decide how they spend their money and no one can tell anyone how they can.

If you want to make money out of it, sure, but competitions are high and people earning 1-5 points per adoptable? That's really not worth my time messing around in Paint.

Buying a design off someone, no point whatsoever.

Oh those.

I'm currently giving those a try because I've seen people spend $300+ on them before and I figure if people are willing to blow their money on something so silly I may as well be one of the people they blow their money on.

So far I'm not doing so well.

Weh.

Adoptables are pretty much premade characters, as ~StripedPower pointed out.
It's much easier, though, to just create your own than pay for one that's already made.

They're just trying to make you pay them for something you could have created yourself.

Not a joke, it's a legit thing. People who pay for adoptables just fall on the trap without even knowing it.

Anyways, they're not only paying for the design, but also for the artwork.

but anyone could use the design or artwork, it's not like a piece of traditional art, where you can sell the 'orginal' XD
but ok i think i get it now o.o

Yup! People draw cute chibis or animals, and sell them, usually so they can use them as their characters, or their patterns if they're animals. Sometimes people will sell OCs that they're not using anymore in the same way too. :)

Usually to sell them for points, or money. Or whatever.
