There are so many varied views about profanity. I beleive it's a creative construct that was memed across current vernacular because of it's simplicity and insultive nature but in actuality it limits more creative sentance construction. What's your view?
profanity has been apart of language likely as long as language has existed, it does need to be done tastefully within speech, ever other words being profanity wouldn't be good.
It sounds less intelligent if used when overused, but everything has it's purpose. I don't think it limits creativity, but makes the user of it sound crass if what they're trying to say is peppered with potty mouth talk.
Sometimes I can't truly take my significant other seriously because he tends to use a lot of profanity in humorous ways. xD Even when he's not trying to be funny.
In my opinion, how "powerful" (or meaningful)/funny a curse word is depends on how often you expect an individual to curse. If said individual never curses, yet they do so when they're talking about something they feel strongly about, then you know they mean business.
However, if the individual were to just overuse them, and just says them...I don't know, every ten seconds, then the words begin to lose their meaning.
For me, I'm not impressed with people who use profanity. Well, if someone swears like this: Oh shit! I lost my teeth!, Damn it! I hate this computer!.. I understand. But if someone swears to offend or embarrass a person, making them feel uncomfortable, that's foul. I believe that not everybody likes profanities or foul languages. When they talk, I feel like all the words coming out from their mouth are garbage. They feel cool about themselves when they swear to the point that they become insensitive. (based on my PERSONAL experience) And for ME, those who swear a lot just lack vocabulary because they can't use alternative words. LOL!
Well, that's a very excellent perspective that you've shared. And I totally agree that people who swear have a limited vocabulary. Actually, now that I think of it, most people today have a limited vocabulary. I guess for most people, spreeding a dictionary is some sort of hell. I wouldn't blame them because a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of picking up and browsing through a lexicon. Some of the words in there were just so complicated yet so simple.
Also, do you think it's wrong to insult/threaten people who've hurt you?
I mean if a guy pushes you into a lake, would it be appropriate to say something like "I will put my foot so far up your arse that the water on my pants will quench you thirst."
Yup, that's how we (me and people in my community) see them. They just lack VOCABULARY. Have you noticed when they speak, instead of using PROPER WORDS, they use words that I don't know where it came from. There was a person who was complaining in our office and swearing to everybody. All of us there were so annoyed because of the way he speaks. I mean, he could complain with some manners and dignity, and he was in front of EDUCATED people so he must learn at least how to TALK DECENTLY. Same here, many deviants swear a lot as if they never learned anything from school but "f**cking." Most of them have no etiquette. They don't actually care if you're already uncomfortable with their "words."
For me, I find it wrong to insult/threaten those people who've hurt you. When you do that, you're just going down to their level. When I can, I just ignore them, and let them die wondering if their words/actions affected me or not at all.
I can't say I haven't been guilty of it, but certain work places are different and different levels of etiquette are expected. What would be a simple complaint can turn into a raging rant-fest and give the impression the person has a bad attitude, if that makes sense.
What I mentioned above was just one of the examples... There are people who swear and I admit some of them funny are funny. But some swear a lot like it's a part already of their tongue. I mean, they can't talk anymore to anybody without it.
but certain work places are different and different levels of etiquette are expected. Etiquette, it means we're expected to behave properly, right? I think no matter where we work, we should at least be aware of how we speak or choose the words that will come from our mouth. That's why they say, think first, because you cannot take back anymore those words you spoke. So at least in my place, manner of speech should be acceptable to the receiver. It would be good if someone can control himself from swearing. People prefer someone who act decently other than someone who speaks like has no education and cannot control his anger.
