The question on Pornography -The dA Discussion

(Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I want to start a discussion not make a complaint. While I do have issues on the subject I’m not here to make dA or any parties appear negative or whatever. I just want people’s views on the subject so I may compare them with mine and then complain later if I find my reasoning’s sound)

So the question: Why do you think dA doesn’t allow pornography?

Is it because of law restrictions, general consensus, artistically or ethnical reasons? What do you think?

Well my opinion is still being worked out but I do believe in a few things.

Firstly: Porn (or also known as erotica) is art no matter how you slice it. It invokes emotions, though obviously of a different and some times looked down upon sort, and uses artistic mediums such as drawing and writing which take practice and skill to create.

Secondly: I don’t see any legal issues. Many other sites allow porn and there are no legal issues. FA is a great example. It’s practically just like dA for furries (if you don’t know furries are those who like anthropomorphic animals and use them in art). The only difference other than the furry thing is that it allows porn. But it also has the mature filter. And I know, kids can easily fake their birth date and get mature accounts… but what would be the point of the mature filter if you’re just trying to block one type of mature artwork, knowing kids can get to it, and just not allowing certain art all together so kids can’t at all get to it on that site? Makes the filter kind of pointless then. It also leads one to believe that a group of people significant enough to make the dA rules decreed that a certain type of art is allowed but not another.

Thirdly: dA has a lot more “legal” artwork out there that is SO much more ethically disturbing than sex: such as death, gore, destruction, discrimination. I’ve seen faces ripped off, heads beheaded, and corpses exploding with smiling faces behind the trigger, people beating other people, bandaging them and explaining how it’s the right thing to do. How guns are the right thing to have when you’re pissed off. How you should react when some one gets on your nerves. There are stories and images giving out all these messages to every one, including minors, and influencing them on a much worse level than erotica could ever do because at its base is just an adult pleasure. Anything beyond that is a person’s own evolution of that. The only thing I believe causing trouble is the fact that culturally we don’t want kids to have sex on the mind at a young age to prevent problems or what not of early parenthood, unprotected sex and diseases etc… which again if a kid isn’t already sexually active then they wont create mature accounts and wont see mature tagged artwork to begin with… making erotica art quite safe to have as any other mature piece.

Fourthly: I think dA is quite selective in “who” they decide is breaking the rules. Do a search on any sexual topic (I used yiff) and you’ll easily find pictures and stories fitting the no pornography rule. (You may have to search in recent rather than popular as I’m sure dA isn’t that careless).

But I could handle that. Sure dA isn’t the master filter and such and can’t catch ALL the mature art out there. Not even the trolls who decide whose art they’ll expose as breaking the rules over another will get all the art. But my recent jib is that I’ve seen an artist, quite easily the top 100 best artist on dA and quite popular, who drew quite the pornographic drawing. Broke every rule quite easily… erections, naked parts, juices, lots of “spreading” of orifices. To top it all off they where chibi so it was quite cubbish (or underage) in nature as well. But this artist wasn’t banned, the drawing is still there today (do not ask for who’s it is because I’m not a prick and I will not disclose this person unless he or she wants me to) and no one seems to care.

My opinion is dA does choose favorites. If an artist is doing quite well, is quite popular, has a following, then they will do everything to not piss that artist off less they leave and take their fans with them… and all that potential money. dA is a business this is brass tax fact. They work for money just as much as they may work for artistic reasons (in my opinion but others can disagree). So looking from their point of view I can see quite easily how they wouldn’t want to have to ban the person simply for that one drawing they did (that’s all I could find from the artist anyhow) as money will be lost.

Once again, I only pose the question: Why do you think dA prohibits pornography?

I may have gotten a bit personal on my reasons and I apologize if it does sound like I’m negatively referencing dA. I don’t wish to complain at this stage, just give my views so others can read, understand, take in the question, and provide their own views.

Long story short:

This is an art website.

Pornography is not art.

dA is a business, like you stated. They want to keep the site open to everyone above 13, not only 18. If they hosted porn here they'd be required by law to restrict access to those only 18+.

Also, porn isn't art.
