The following two posts is the transcript for the Featured Chat with `blackeri held May 15th, 2006.
<Insignificant-Other> Tonight's special guest is the very talented and popular artist, Blackeri. We thank her for being with
us tonight, and thanks to all of you for coming.
<Insignificant-Other> As always, please have your questions pre-typed, have fun, and let the questions begin!
<blackeri> hello everyone
<lazybutt> Hey, blackeri. How are you? When did the "Seven Deadly Sins" project come about? What inspired it?
<blackeri> I am fine thank you! It is quite hard to specify only one thing which inspired the series.. It was many things at
a time, really I have watched the movie called "Seven" and started to think about working on these series...
<blackeri> and then I just worked on the project, gathering information, ideas etc
<blackeri> Unoficially, I can say that the Magnum icecream Seven Sins series influenced me to some extent as well
<lazybutt> lol.
<blackeri> I hope this answeers your question.
<lazybutt> Yes, thank you.
<AglioPh0bia> Blackeri, you are easily the best artist I have ever seen and my favourite on dA.com. But are you ever
dissatisfied with your own work?
<blackeri> Aw thank you so much Oh being honest I am all the time! I am so obsessed with finding flaws in my work... I
start a work thinking it's looking quite good and then, after a while, I see nothing else but things to fix and improve
<blackeri> I think it's quite good for self-improvement though
<AglioPh0bia> If I may, which of your pieces is your favourite, then?
<blackeri> I think I like Ravene the most. Each piece means something to me though.
<AglioPh0bia> Thanks!
<SoySauceNinja> Before, I start, you're probably my biggest inspiration! This is dumb, but how did you figure out how to get
the folds right with the light/dark stuff and not make it look stupid? Ew. A run-on
<blackeri> Well I have started with wrapping textiles around chairs or coathangers etc. And I studied how the light affects
different types of material. What is crucial to understand is the fact, that all materials, be it linen or silk or satin
reflect the light in a different way
<SoySauceNinja> Nyep! Thank you! ^^
<ElvenHottie2006> Hello Blackeri. You truely are an amazing artist. How old were you when you first started to draw? Who/What
were your inspirations for drawing? Are you going to continue your drawing career?
<blackeri> Simply start off by observing or taking reference photos. After a while of training you will notice you can do
those with ease.
<blackeri> Thank you very much I have started to draw before learning how to walk I had a few year long break.. And
digital art I have taken up at the age of 15 or so
<blackeri> I have had many inspirations throughout my life.. First I adored my grandma and my mom who painted with me And
later, when I grew up and got to know all the traditional masters, I fell in love with Klimt, Mucha, Rembrandt, Malczewski...
<blackeri> As for my future - I don't know yet. I will surely be painting as a hobby throughout my life, but I am afraid of
my passion becoming my everyday obligation. I think the future will show who will I end up being.
<blackeri> Do you have any more questions?
<ElvenHottie2006> hmm... I think you answered them all. Thank you very much for spending your time to answer them. Have a
nice day!
<blackeri> Thank you
<lazybutt> Are there going to be anymore series similar to the Seven Deadly Sins series that we all can look forward too?
<blackeri> I am planning on a few, but cannot confirm anything yet or specify, when exactly will I be releasing something
new. For now I want to experiment on single artworks, but I can right now say that I am not going to do the Heavenly Virtues
for sure though.
<blackeri> Would you like to know anything else?
<lazybutt> Sure.
<lazybutt> What music do you listen to often?
<blackeri> Uhm prettymuch everything! I like punk and rock the most though
<lazybutt> Nice. Thanks.
<wolf1302> hello nice to meet you , when do you think to continue the 7 sins series and wich one will be the next ?
<blackeri> After a long break, I am working on Gluttony right now. I think I will be finished within 3 weeks. Afterwards I
will be doing Wrath and thats it for Deadly Sins
<wolf1302> cant wait to see the great work. thanks
<sundayx> Firstly, I'd just like to thank you for participating in this featured chat. Your work has been a substantial
inspiration to so many people, you should be very proud .
The time between submitting each of the "7 Deadly Sins" deviations has been quite lengthy; how long would you say you
take on average on each of the pieces then? Do you think you will perhaps create a tutorial on one of your pieces (if you
have time) for those aspiring to mimic particular areas of your style?
<blackeri> Thank you for the kind words. I know that I am unfortunately quite slow with the series, but my my schedule is
incredibly tight lately. Each piece takes usually around 60-70 hours of pure work, but what takes most time is planning the
image - concept, symbolism, colours - all take a lot of my time
<blackeri> As for tutorials, I am not sure if I will be releasing one on a Deadly Sin, but I surely will be devoting some
time of mine to write tutorials on specific topics such as hair or gown painting, for my website's tutorial section.
<sundayx> Ah, that's brilliant. Thank you
<blackeri>
<sucmfic> Heya. It's good to see you this evening. My question is: If you had to go on a date with any deviantART staff
member, who would it be and why? Also, with all these questions about the deadly sins, have you seen the film SE7EN
with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt?
<blackeri> I am not going to answer the first question, cause my boyfriend is here and watching the chat And yes, I've
seen the movie numerous times, I really love it!
<sucmfic> Thanks for answering the second.
<breaking-reality> Hey, blackeri, do you think being a fairly popular artist on dA has any effect on the way you comment
and/or critique other’s artwork?
<blackeri> Oh no, I don't think so. As always, I sometimes leave "fangirl" comments as well as thorough criitics, but it all
depends on the piece of art.
<blackeri> I might have less time to comment on artwork, but I always try to do so, when somebody sends me a note about it
* breaking-reality nods
<breaking-reality> But you don't have any problems feeling like your comments are being scrutinized more or anything like
that?
<blackeri> no, I have never felt this way
<breaking-reality> Good.
<breaking-reality> Thank you.
<Thoran> Seeing the great detail of your work and the time it takes to draw a single picture like "His Only Friend" have you
ever thought about painting with oil on linen to make the drawing even more valuable and something really special?
<blackeri> Thanks for the question I used to use traditional mediums, but nowadays, since I was introduced to tablets, I
haven't simply found time for that activity. I think I will someday come back to the roots though, and paint something
traditional. After all, a "real" painting seems much more precious, due to the fact you cannot make 100 copies of it
<Thoran> cool
<Insignificant-Other> Does that answer your question Thoran?
<Thoran> another question your favourite game is WoW, whats your favourite race and class and why havent we seen any WoW
fanart from you yet?
<blackeri> I am a 100% ally, so it's night elves and humans for me Though I can't wait to try the Blood Elves when the new
expansion comes As for the Fanart, there is one in my gallery already, but I think I should paint more of WoW indeed!
<Thoran> thanks alot for answering my questions
<blackeri> Oh, and as for class, I think I like hunters the most. It's just so much fun to have a pet!
<Ji-Owon> Hello! thanks for this opportunity to a great artist like youself. Your website says "coming soon" - wondering what
you will be putting up there? Anything like the walkthru for "The Predator"? - would love to see some more walkthru's
Where did the inspiration for the Predator come from (those vine like fingers and toes in particular)?
<blackeri> Oh it makes me ashamed to talk about my website, it's "coming soon" for 10 months now I simply had no time to
really work on it and decide on the layout... As for walkthroughs, I was lately busy with making tutorials for a magazine
called ImagineFX by Future Publishing, therefore I could not really spend time on doing free time tutorials. I will be fixing
that soon though!
<Ji-Owon> take as long as you like - I'm sure it will be great.
<blackeri> And as for The Predator, I just wanted to give the character clothes to make her more, well, predator like Like
a kind of bird for example
<blackeri> thank you
<Ji-Owon> cool thanks - also if you like the WoW art (which is great) check out Guild Wars as well - some awesome work
there too
<blackeri> Yeah I have seen a cover for some Guild Wars addon, it was fantastic! Very inspiring and I think I might draw
something in this style soon
<xexa> Hello blackeri. Although I've only recently come to know your work, I gotta say it's truly amazing. My question
regards inspiration, albeit in a different manner as ~Ji-Owon's question. I've read in your *DMchat interview that
you freqüently use WoW as a inspiration source. What other sources are there? How does, say, music- or day-to-day-related
inspiration sources hit you? Do you take notes, photographies, or check lots and lots of magazines and TV shows to get ideas?
<xexa> And sorry for the dealy.
<blackeri> It can be anything really! I am often inspired by singel colours that I see, for example, riding a bus or during a
walk. I have to admit that music is one of the strongest influences - through the melody AND the lyrics. For example when I
hear something that I think relates to me somehow, I immediately get a million ideas!
<xexa> Do you write them down?
<xexa> Or you try to listen to it again in front of the workspace
<xexa> ?
<blackeri> Because inspiration always comes unexpectedly, I never am prepared to take a photo, but I often end up scribbling
something on the back of my notebook. I sometimes write down pieces of lyrics or picture ideas and such.
<blackeri> Yes indeed, I do! I usually listen to this very one song during the whole painting process
<xexa> Sweet.
<xexa> Thanks. Keep up the nice gallery.
<blackeri> thank you
<Fleeples> Blackeri, forgive me if this is nosy... But how did you come across DevaintART?
<blackeri> I was a part of one online gaming community and saw some artists on IRC posting links to their artwork I
observed passively for almost a year before deciding to join myself
<Fleeples> Thank you! Is there any work which you've ever done that you've hated so much you didn't submit?
<blackeri> Plenty!
<Fleeples> Okay, thanks.
<lazybutt> Who's your boyfriend?
<blackeri> p-and-a
<lazybutt> Good answer.
<lazybutt> Thanks.
<lazybutt>
<wolf1302> Do you draw sketches on paper before you create the work on the compuer?
<blackeri> Not anymore. Scanning sketches is rather inconvenient for me. The only situation when I sketch, is when I do not
have access to my computer (i.e. school )
<wolf1302> Thanx an keep on having backups of your pc
<Icar0> When you feel like not continuing with this piece of art, you simple erase it from your mind or keep it in a safe
place for later?
<blackeri> I usually leave a piece hoping I might someday like it enough to finish it... but practice shows I never come back
to old stuff
<Icar0> oh i see... Xexa just asked what i wanted to know more than anything, seems like you are very creative, how lucky!
<blackeri> thank you
<Icar0> that would be all thank you for your answers ^^.
<rleathers> 1. Any on a timetable for completion of the Seven Deadly Sins series? 2. After reading your feature in Imagine
FX, I was thinking about buying a subscription. Do you have any recommended reading for aspiring artists?
<blackeri> Unfortunately, no estimated finishing time as of now I will be trying to complete the series by June the latest
though. There are lots of publications worth reading I believe, many of which are by Future Publishing. ImagineFX is strictly
for tutorials and direct help for digital artists, but you can also check Computer Arts or Computer Arts projects for
inspiration and help
<rleathers> thank you very much
<blackeri> The best reading, for me at least, is anatomy books. I have a book by Sarah Simblet "Anatomy for the artist" and
it's great help!
<rleathers> ill look for it. thanks
<DemonHearts> Oops, sorry about earlier! ^^: *is embarrassed* Heh... anyway, I love your artwork, and one thing I have always
pondered was this: How do you do your anatomy? I'm really bad at anatomy and I always look for advice.
<DemonHearts> I know that you mentioned that book above, but I mean when you're drawing, etc.
<blackeri> Studying observing really. There is no real fast trick or help, it's just a matter of practice... It is best to
learn directly from live models, so you can always ask friends or family members to pose for you while you train
<DemonHearts> Cool!
<HiveQueen> Blackeri, did this start as a hobby for you, or did you go/are you going to school for art? I also was wondering
if you use many layers or if you do it mostly like real painting (one layer, difficult to edit).
<blackeri> I started painting as a hobby. I have never intended any art schools nor had art classes. As for layers, when I
started I used to make a load of them, but nowadays It's just usually 2-4 at a time.
<HiveQueen> ok, thank you
<blackeri> It somehow makes it easier for me to blend colours and spares my computer from lagging too much, too.
<HiveQueen> good point
<enialadam> Hi blackeri, it's amazing how fast your skills have developed, and how quickly your popularity has grown. You
have a wonderful gallery. My question is: do you apply for 'jobs' for example did you apply to imagine FX to do tutorials or
do they come to you?
<blackeri> Thank you Madalaine I never really applied for anything, maybe because I was too shy of getting rejected The
ImagineFX jobs I have been proposed by the magazine's editor. Same goes for other jobs/publications.
<enialadam> Fantastic and congrat's for these opportuninties, very much deserved!
<blackeri> Thank you
<AriandraRayne> First of all I'd like to say I love your work! It's really inspiring! 1. Did you learn to draw/paint through
trial and error or did you learn another way? 2. Did you ever trace things to learn? 3. How do you choose your color pallette
for each piece - do you use the color wheel?
<blackeri> 1. Yeah it was (and is) always a matter of practice for me. Digital art is fantastic this way - you can experiment
as much as you want and undo your moves when needed 2. Yeah I tried that, but I haven't learned anything through it, so I
just started taking live references instead, in form of my mom and brother 3. Colours come always naturally to me. I
usually think of them straight in my headb efore starting to paint, therefore I always have them done before actually working
<blackeri> If I have to imrpove the colour palette I usually mix existing colour choices and see what I achieve through
making them blend freely
<AriandraRayne> Thank you! That is very helpful!
<Fleeples> Me again... Blackeri, has there ever been a completely random peice of art that you've done? Something that
just came spur-of-the-moment? If so, did you submit it to DevaintART? Also, have you ever been completely flooded with
comments? (Don't worry, that'll be one of the weirdest things I'll ask you...) Another slightly strange question- have you
ever done a featured chat before now?
Finaly, what is your favourite thing about DevaintART? Thank you in advance.
<blackeri> Yeah I did The Predator from my gallery is just a piece like that. I have started it spontaneously wihtout
intent to actually finish it.. I just liked it enough to work a lot on it. As for being flooded, yeah, it usually happened
when I submitted something from the Deadly Sins And no, I have done interviews before, but this is my first chat like
this, and I have to admit I am having great fun
<Fleeples> Thanks!
<justfornothing> Hi. This might be kind of similar to other questions people have asked, but oh well . My sister and I
have been following your work for some time now, and one thing we’ve always speculated on would be the inspiration for
your characters. Are any or all of them modeled after people you know/have seen? Or do the faces just take shape as you go?
<blackeri> They are usually made up from my head I sometimes am inspired by a specific facial features I have seen though,
for example chin or interesting eyes, when painting a face. It never influences me to a huge extent though - I usually make
up characters fom my head
<justfornothing> Thank you very much!
<blackeri> And yes I usually have a facial feature or two specified before starting to paint, but my ideas usually change
during the workflow
<slickgreekgeo> Blackeri, you're hand down one of the best digital artists right now (and one of my favorites at that). Some
questions for you 1. Do you have any tutorials available online relating to your painting methods? 2. Do you have any
books you can recommend on digital painting, perhaps some you used yourself? 3. Who are your favorite digital artists? 4.
Update your website!
<blackeri> Thank you very much, George Right now, I do not have any tutorials online, just the published ones in ImagineFX
issues 2-4. As for books or tutorials, I do not really follow any devoted to technique itself. For me the best way to learn
is observing the ready artwork on a closeup, mainly because there are plenty of ways to achieve a certain effect and it's
most efficient to find your own.
<slickgreekgeo> Great suggestions, thanks, appreciate it. Looking forward to more masterpieces!
<blackeri> 3. I would say Anry Nemo and Christophe Vacher, I just love them to bits And I know I should update my wbesite,
I just have no time nor ideas for a layout!
<blackeri> thank you
<slickgreekgeo> thank you
<Fleeples> Yet again a random question: Did you always want to do digital painting? Was there anything else you tried first,
or was it always what you wanted to do when you thought about a hobby?
<blackeri> I never "decded" to start any form of painting.. Since my earliest childhhood it was a passion of mine, therefore
maybe I should not even talk about art in terms of a hobby.. I couldn't live without it really Digital art I have
discovered by total accident through an online game
<Ji-Owon> Doh my question was just answered umm what is your favourite colour
<Ji-Owon> well hopefully your fingers had a rest there
<blackeri> I like all colours but I have some favourite colour-combinations does that count? Its sea blue + brown and red +
black
<Ji-Owon> thanks
<Xeon1> blackeri: How long have you been doing painting? I no i dont really like Anime paintings, im more into Vector,
What are behind your reasons for people liking Anime ? Would you ever do a collab with other artists i.e 3D Modellers or
Digital Artists ?Have you consider changing from doing digital paintings? What was your most Payed work for your paintings?
<Xeon1> soz for the multiple questions
<blackeri> I have been an anime fan myself, but I grew out of it I suppose, so I am not the best person to say why do people
really like it Since anime has so many genres from sci fi to crime, I think the reasons are the same as for liking normal
movies As for collabs, I was thinking about it actually. I simply have no time at the moment, since my current projects
and school are sucking me dry
<Xeon1> cool thankx what was your most paid job for paintings if any . . . .
<blackeri> I haven't ever considered this - I love digital art a lot and do not plan on leaving it As for paid projects..
It's hard to say what was best in terms of profit per hour, cause usually the most paiid projects were a ridiculously big
amount of work
<Xeon1> thankx
<j-cyka> First of all I am a big fan of yours^^! I wanted to ask you if your family always supported you - as an artist - and
if that has an effect on you anyway?
<blackeri> Yes, my family has been wonderfully supportive. I am an awfully moody person and they have always been there for
me to boost me So I owe them quite a lot, without all the mental support, especially from my mom and boyfriend, I wouldn't
manage to continue working as much as now.
<j-cyka> Are your artworks also on another site than deviantart?
<blackeri> oh yes, I try to showcase my work in many places to get as many different critiques as I can. I show my artworks on gfxartist.com cgtalk.com and some others, too.
<j-cyka> ok thank you very much hope to see more of your work soon!!
<blackeri> my biggest online gallery is deviantart though
<blackeri> thank you

<lazybutt>
<blackeri> thank you
<divinescape> I just wanted to say that I love your art and have actually used your designs in my costumes that I've worn to
balls. So where do you get your inspiration?
<blackeri> Wow, thats nice to hear thank you When you have time please show me the photos! As for inspiration, it
usually comes quite unexpectedly. Its everything - colours, music, movies, advertisements and such
<divinescape> I was especially taken by your 7 deadly sins
<divinescape> everything seems to work so perfectly
<blackeri> Yes well ,those series were the most planned out of all my works
<divinescape> the colors, the poses, etc. And it's amazing the way you paint fabric
<divinescape> ahh
<blackeri> thank you it's all a matter of practice and observing
<divinescape> I will be sure to send you the photos
<blackeri> hehe ok thanks
<divinescape> I have gotten many compliments on the design
<divinescape> and I always credit you
<blackeri> Thank you very much. Would you like to know anything else?
<divinescape> so thank you for acting as my inspiration!
<divinescape> nope, thanks very much for speaking with me!
<justfornothing> I’ve heard you say that you were involved in online gaming before you started the whole digital art
scene, and I guess my question would be when did you start, and which online game did/do you enjoy the most . Also, what
would be your favorite type of artwork? In terms of admiring, rather than creating.
<blackeri> The game thanks to which I was introduced to digital art was Ragnarok Online. The second online game was World of
Warcraft which I loved much much more I love fantasy, surreal and dark art, but I always value the idea behind a painting
the most.
<justfornothing> Ok, thank you very much! Your work is very inspiring
<blackeri> thank you
<slickgreekgeo> Blackeri, don't know if this was asked, but what program do you mostly use (ex. Photoshop vs Painter)? If you
use both, can you specify what you think each program's strongest and weakest aspects are? Thanks again, sorry to bother you
again, it's just that I'm a huge fan I tell ya!
<blackeri> Painter I find way easier to use, definitely better for beginners. Colour blending, thanks to specific brushes is
natural and comes easily there. Photoshop is harder to master (discovering what brushes are good for what takes a while) but
gives fabulous results. I usually use both of those programs. Painter for gowns, textiles and such and Photoshop for skin and
texturing.
<slickgreekgeo> Interesting, thanks again
<NeverNegative> Hey blackeri. I see you only have five pics from your Seven Deadly Sins series, and I was just wondering what
the next sin will be and when you think you will have it completed by?
<blackeri> I am working on Gluttony right now and will probably finish it in a couple of weeks. I plan on finishing the
series by June
<NeverNegative> ah, cool beans, cant wait to see it
<blackeri>
<NeverNegative> thnx
<Nukita> hello , first of all I'd like to tell you I'm a great admirer of yours , and I love your artwork a lot!! I wanted
to ask you if you have any special inspirations for backgrounds as they're always so detailed and well-worked , and if you
create them with the whole piece or just do them apart as I never draw backgrounds in my pics 'cause I don't have any
knowledge
<blackeri> I think of backgrounds, along with my foregrounds, always before starting to paint. This way I can get a coherent
design altogether. As for inspirations - it depends on the project really. Sometimes I think of osmething to achieve a
certain mood and sometimes I concentrate on adding as many symbols to a background as I can.
<blackeri> No knowledge is really needed for creating backgrouns, just practice and some conceptual thinking.
<Nukita> ok , thanks a lot , keep the great work!
<blackeri> thank you.
<AriandraRayne> Is there any way we could get a sneak preview in words on how you are doing the gluttony painting? Such as
overall color scheme to it or anything?! Also when you first started digital painting did you use a mouse or did you start
off with a tablet?
<blackeri> She is chubby, but still a very beautiful seductive lady. The color theme will be pink, with some other color
accents. And yes I have used a mouse for ashort while before moving on a tablet, it's been awfully hard to paint with it
though!
<AriandraRayne> So you found painting with a mouse easier?
<blackeri> Ah sorry, I meant that paintign with a mouse was very hard, not the tablet I found the tablet very easy to get
used to
<AriandraRayne> I see. Thank you and Thanks for the preview! I can't wait to see it and the last one!!!
<blackeri> thank you
<justfornothing> Sorry about asking so many questions . Which would you say you enjoy doing more, the more
traditional painting (brush and canvas), or digital? Also. When you ‘lose’ the creative mood (if ever > .
>, what do you find is the most effective at bringing your attention back?
<blackeri> I think I enjoy digital art more, simply because it's so comfrotable.. I don't always feel confident enough to try
things on paper (or canvas) - if you make a mistake there, it's always hard to undo it. With digitaal art you have so many
chances to experiment, change colours and generaly try things you were too scared of trying before!
<blackeri> Usually, after painting non stop for a few days I get this "artistic block" yes.. It's really hard to say what
brings my painting mood back though.. I simply try not too stress over artwork that much and watch al lsorts of things that
might inspire me
<justfornothing> I never thought of that! It always seemed to me that painting would be easier, because you wouldn't have to
deal with the whole tablet/computer deal and you could just whoop out your paints and experiment
<blackeri> I hope this answers your question
<justfornothing> It does . Thank you very much
<Nukita> Hi , it's me again ^^ just for asking you , how long does one of your pieces takes you from the moment you sart it
'til you finish it?
<blackeri> It depends if we talk in terms of pure work or the time spent on a piece. Pure painting usually takes something
around 30-70 hours depending on the project. Thinking takes a lot more - I sometimes end up altering my ideas, changing the
elements I considered done before etc. That is why I release my pieces so rarely.
<Nukita> aha , okey , I understand
<Nukita> thanks a lot again
<slickgreekgeo> Digital painting is something that requires a lot of patience to achieve desired results, I'd say. My
question to you is do you paint w/o any 'outside interference'? What I mean by this is, do you help pass the time by
listenting to music while painting, for example, or do you concentrate 100% on the painting at hand? Also, I find it hard to
'promote' my artwork. Do you have any recommendations for this? Thanks again.
<blackeri> I always have music on when I paint, usually the one which suits the mood of apainting - this way I get quite a
lot of ideas. Other than that I hate any other sounds or disturbances of my workflow - that is why I usually paint at night,
when no phones are ringing and such.
<slickgreekgeo> Great suggestions, thank ya!
<blackeri> As for promotion, I would just recommend you to show your work in as many places as you can. There are always
different people on every website and you may receive different critiques and approaches to your work.
<slickgreekgeo> i'll def do that, thanks again
<isabelucha> Hello blackeri, we're very pleased to have you here! I was wondering... is there something that people from
Poland put in their soup or something? Because each time I come across an userpage of a polish artist, I end up drooling at
their gallery. Do you have any kind of "special relation" to art in your country?
<blackeri> Uhm I don't think so, no ;D
<chix0r> lol
<isabelucha> just wondering!
<isabelucha> Thank you
<chix0r> photoshop soup
<justfornothing> I have two questions. One would be, do you ever paint outside? Or would that be too distracting? And also,
most of your gallery I see is fantasy inspired characters and the like - do you ever do realistic themes?
<justfornothing> What did you paint when you first began?
<blackeri> I would love to paint outside, but since I do not own a laptop, i cannot. I sometimes sketch in my notebook, if I
have the chance, though. As for the themes.. I always wanted to paint something that doesn't quite exist in real life... I
see not much point in painting something you can take a photograph of - at least this is something I don't enjoy doing.
<blackeri> Well I began with stickmen And moved onto princesses in gowns, seems I haven't grown up from that!
<justfornothing> Hehehe
<justfornothing> Thank you for answering my questions
<blackeri> thanks
<Insignificant-Other> And our final question goes to sergiofx, thanks everyone.
<sergiofx> Ok, the final question, hope it wasnt asked before. My question to you is whether you use any kind of reference in
your work, whether it was the for the figure itself, the clothing, or the background. Thank you
<blackeri> If I need reference, I usually try to get a live one. This usually means asking a family member to pose for me or
wrapping material around a piece of furniture etc etc. The longer I paint, the less reference I use though.
<sergiofx> Okay thank you Keep up the amazing work, am one of your fans
<blackeri> thank you
<Insignificant-Other> Oh, one more question
<Nukita> just a curiosity question , where did you found the reference for the kitten on your last pic? you've got
one?
<blackeri> I haven't had a real reference for a kitten. I just watched soem persians to get the muzzle to look right, but not
referencing it strictly.
<Nukita> oke ^^
<Nukita> thanks
<Insignificant-Other> That wraps things up for the questions tonight. Again many thanks to `blackeri for giving us her
time this evening, and thank you all for attending!
<blackeri> thank you
<Insignificant-Other> We'll now open the room up and have a free-for-all for a few minutes to finish up.
<chix0r>
<neko>
<AriandraRayne> Thank you Blackeri for your time today! It was a privelage!
<justfornothing> Omgz that kitten was so cute > . > Are we still allowed to ask questions?
<65536> wspaniałe prace Marta, pozdrawiam
<blackeri> Thanks a lot guys, it was great fun
<blackeri> thank you
<tmpst24myst> blackeri: thank you, your concepts are fascinating
<neko> Hey, sorry for being so late but thanks...
<blackeri> yeah sure thing
<Insignificant-Other> justfornothing: Sure
<chix0r> excellent work Insignificant-Other and tmpst24myst for the co-ordination of the chat
<justfornothing> Insignificant-Other: Sweet
<GirlxSuicide> thank you for useful answers, Marta.
<chix0r> and you too MNBot :thumb13811503:
<Insignificant-Other>
<drzerg> Hello from Latvia and i really like your gobs too!
<Insignificant-Other> hehe
<65536> im waiting for 7 sins continuation ; )
<justfornothing> How long did it take to do the kitten in your last piece? And yes, thank you so much for doing this!
<AriandraRayne> I have a quick question for the admins: How are featured chat people chosen?
<blackeri> The kitty took about2 hours
<chix0r> AriandraRayne: we have a thread on our forum which people can put on suggestions
<Nukita> blackeri: just the kitty? oh......hard work then ^^
<chix0r> AriandraRayne: so it's generally what the community ask for
<Libellula> aghh!! I just arrived now! and I didn't see all the conversation... is there a chance to have the chat for read
soon?
<AriandraRayne> ok thanks chiz0r
<GirlxSuicide> i have 2 short questions. how you developed your own unique style? and the second one... you said that you
prefer to learn ready works closeup from what artists did you learn?
<justfornothing> blackeri: Would you say it was more difficult than what you normally do?
<Insignificant-Other> Libellula: there'll be logs, yep
<chix0r> Libellula: there will be a transcript
<AriandraRayne> I mean chix0r
<Libellula> ohh thank tou so much!! :
<AriandraRayne> Goodbye everyone! It's been fun learning how you work Blackeri!
<Icar0> wootage
<-and-a>
<blackeri> GirlxSuicide: I think that style comes naturally. The more you paint them ore you discover what you like more and
what you like less. YOu develop your techniques as well as themes... It's a natural process I believe.
<JesusIV>
<GirlxSuicide> blackeri: thank you.
<neko> blackeri, have you ever thought of doing any sci-fi work or is fantasy your thing?
<blackeri> I learned by watcing scans of bouguereau's work as well as some artworks by anry nemo and cristophe vacher
<blackeri> neko: I am not that much a fan of sci-fi but yeah, I was thinking of trying something different.. I just need more
time to paint
<neko> That is cool... I understand how that is... I am mainly into steam or cyberpunk myself
<GirlxSuicide> blackeri: anry nemo is cool. thank you.
<justfornothing> blackeri: Have you ever thought of just quitting the whole school thing and just living off your paintings,
or do you think that would make it more of a job than a hobby?
<chix0r> blackeri: if you could do the artwork for any band or musician, who would it be?
<blackeri> oh yes I have. Lately especially I would rather have solid education before I decide what I really am going to
do in life though.
<-and-a> apulanta?
<justfornothing> Probably a good idea
<blackeri> chix0r: hard one! I'm a fan of a finnish band called Apulanta but from international hmm.. maybe coldplay
<chix0r> ah I've never heard of apulanta, but I think you'd be good for coldplay, I'd maybe buy their stuff if you designed
for them
<blackeri> hehe
<chix0r> I just discovered a polish band called riverside
<chix0r> lots of talent over there, as isabelucha said
<leaf-lover> what time does this start again?
<blackeri> being honest i never knew they are polish, haha!
<Insignificant-Other> leaf-lover: about 2 h 20 ago
<blackeri> precisely
<leaf-lover> Indirectly: nooo! Did I miss it!
<justfornothing> blackeri: What type of band is apulanta?
<Nukita> let tigerzi enter!!!!
<blackeri> justfornothing: they play punk, rock, that kind of stuff
<justfornothing> awesome
<neko> It's alright leaf-lover... I missed most of it too...
<leaf-lover> chix0r:
<Insignificant-Other> leaf-lover: You still have a chance to ask something now and there'll be logs as always
<leaf-lover> Insignificant-Other: this is true hehe
<leaf-lover> NadavDov:
<justfornothing> Insignificant-Other: How long will this free for all thingy continue?
<Indirectly> Thank you for doing this, blackeri.
<GirlxSuicide> i'm on dial-up and i haven't any problems
<Nukita> tigerzi:
<blackeri> Thanks to all of you for coming, ti was really fun
<tigerzi> hello everyone!
<Nukita> c'mon lucy!!
<leaf-lover> GirlxSuicide: my mum was using the phone while the chat was on
<Insignificant-Other> justfornothing: depends how rowdy you get Or how long blackeri wants it to
<justfornothing> leaf-lover: Oh man, that sucks!
<tigerzi> i'm not so sure how these work, i've never done one before...
<blackeri> Hi tigerzi, love your stuff btw
<neko> Ah... suxor... I was sleeping myself... and it is only 4pm where I am...
<Nukita> tigerzi: look that!!!
<GirlxSuicide> leaf-lover: really sad
<leaf-lover> blaceri: mind if I ask you something now? Even if its too late? *looks pleading*
<tigerzi> omg! thank you so much blackeri, my jaw has just hit the floor from such a lovely compliment!
<blackeri> of course, go on
<leaf-lover> Gabafoo: I know, I am going to have broadband one day though!
<leaf-lover> jarling-art: it sure does
<Nukita> tigerzi:
<justfornothing> Insignificant-Other: Rowdy . Not me
<Insignificant-Other>
<leaf-lover> blackeri: aww thankees (it's a bit of a randomer ) what's your favourite type of cheese?
<chix0r> oh god, always the food questions at these chats lol
<blackeri> camembert
<justfornothing> leaf-lover: I was going to ask if she liked tea earlier . Random questions pwn
<blackeri> haha
<blackeri>
<wiltz> hello blackeri
<tigerzi> haha! a good choice.
<Maquaii> *l* thats a weird question leaf-lover
<leaf-lover> justfornothing: they sure do!
<tigerzi> can i ask something a little less food-related?
<Kraystina> XD nice question
<blackeri> of course shoot
<leaf-lover> Maquaii: they rule
<justfornothing> leaf-lover:
<leaf-lover> blackeri: ooo nice choice, I personally like a good strong cheddar
<justfornothing> Oh poop . What is up with me now knowing how to use emoticons -.-
<Nukita> justfornothing: c'mon m you can do it
<justfornothing> Nukita: Thanks for the support
<Nukita>
<tigerzi> blackeri: what's do you find most enjoyable when painting? I know I always run out of steam after the face is
done...
<-and-a> honey i'm on gg, brb
<-and-a> you're not answaring
<blackeri> tigerzi: great question Indeed the face is the focus point for me too! I love painting gowns as well, but faces
are most fun definitely
<justfornothing> Alright, I'm out . Thank you blackeri for coming and doing this, thank you admins for setting it up .
<3
<Nukita> blackeri: wat do you think about drawing hands? some artists say they're the most difficult part of the body to
paint...
<tigerzi> blackeri: that reminds me, your skill with fabric is STUNNING! do you use references when you paint?
<neko> blackeri: May I ask how I could get more people on here to look at my work... I only have two to three people regulary
commenting on my work
<blackeri> Nukita: Indeed, I hate painting hands! They are very hard to do for me as well. I am currently learning to paint
them better though
<Nukita>
<blackeri> tigerzi: not anymore. I used to use courtains and table cloths as my reference, now I learnedt he basics so I am
just experimenting from my head
<blackeri> neko: It's very hard to say really. Comment on peoples work a lot and try to showcase your art on other websites
too, perhaps?
<Deirh> blackeri: What character class/race did you play in World of Warcraft? Would if be a Priest...Elven Priest (wild
guess here)?
<tigerzi> wow, that's amazing... it's my aim to be able to draw straight from my imagination
<blackeri> Deirh: a Night Elf hunter and a human priest
<blackeri> Deirh: quite a good guess then!
<neko> Thanks... I have been working on that but I still get no pay off... Maybe I just need to get better with what I do
perhaps...
<slickgreekgeo> Blackeri's still in the house!
<Deirh> Damn, almost! And if I can ask, how long were you using references for whole human figure and for faces, before
you were able to pull them right from your head? Were you studying artistic anatomy for that? Or simply learn by practice?
<tmpst24myst> blackeri: Do you have a 'real life' gallery or is your art strictly internet posted? If not, do you see yourelf
opening one?
<blackeri> Deirh: dependso n the pose.. .there are poses i still need to reference and some I got a hang of already.
<Kraystina> blackeri: Do you ever imagine painting something in your head but you just can't do it?
<Deirh> blackeri: Thanks,
<justfornothing> blackeri: justfornothing's sister here... I was wondering, do you do all of your work digitally now? or do
you do a sketch first in pencil or pen, and scan it in?
<-and-a> <3
<blackeri> tmpst: strictly internet for now, but I have been proposed to showcase my works in a gallery, so I will be working
on this project for now
<-and-a> see'ya all have a nice day Bye honey :** brb on gg
<tmpst24myst> If I ever get to Poland, i will be sure to check out your gallery
<tigerzi> Blackeri: what inspires you? hehe, an original question there!!
<blackeri> Kraystina: sometimes yes, and I hate when it happens. I usually work long enough to figure it out and paint it, no
matter the effort
<blackeri> justfornothing: currently I paint strictly digitally now, I sketch straight in Painter or Photoshop
<justfornothing> blackeri: neat. I wish I could do that silly question now: how did you pick your name?
<blackeri> tigerzi: everything really! from music to colours through advertisements and movies
<blackeri> justfornothing: Oh I liked the name Keri and just tried to mess around with it, for the purpose of an online
game.. It is my mom who came up with blackeri So uninteresting, I know
<AmySaD> blackeri: I`ve a question ^^ you study marketing and management? how do you find time for all this??? ...wow
<tigerzi> blackeri: colours you say? hehe, what's your favourite?
<justfornothing> blackeri: how many times tonight have you been asked what your inspiration is?
<blackeri> AmySaD: It's very hard to manage my personal life along with school and hobbies, but I just uh.. sleep a little
<blackeri> tigerzi: blue, red and black
<AmySaD> *g* then you`re good at timemanagement
<blackeri> (if I miss anyone's question please let me know
<Deirh> blackeri: and how long it was before you became comfortable with using tablet for sketching instead of a regular
pencil? I find that many highly skilled digital artists still prefer good olde' paper sketching.
<65536> (answer if you wish so blackeri) my question is: in wchih city you're planing to make gallery?
<blackeri> 65536: I have been offered to make one in Lodz
<justfornothing> blackeri: so I take it it wasn't that hard to adjust to the feel of the tablet... is it annoying to not have
the same feel as a pencil when you're sketching? How do they differ for you?
<65536> oh i see, thanks ; )
<GirlxSuicide> blackeri: what kind of tablets do you like to work with?
<blackeri> justfornothing: it was hard to learn not to look at my hand while sketching, as it is with a pencil. After I broke
this barrier it was all smooth
<JesusIV> blackeri: got one quick question for you, did you know you rock? o/
<blackeri> GirlxSuicide: I love my trust Wacom Intuos 3
<chix0r> lol
<blackeri> trusty*
<65536>
<tigerzi> heh, i second JesusIV
<blackeri> LOL thank you very much JesusIV
<GirlxSuicide> blackeri: thanks
<justfornothing> third JesusIV ^_^
<Ardariel> Backery, do you find it interesting to have art as your.. well.. job? Has your attitude to what you do changed
when you took it up as your work?
<chix0r> Ardariel: try b + tab to auto complete someones nickname
<chix0r> that way you might get it right
<blackeri> hehe~
<blackeri> well
<justfornothing> <3 chix0r
<Deirh> lol
<JesusIV> blackeri: anytime
<chix0r>
<Ardariel> Sooorry BLackery...
<blackeri> art isn't my work. I just do commissions when I have time and projects for companies, but other than that it still
stays my hobby, something I do free time
<Deirh> closer!
<justfornothing> -.-... (I don't think Ardariel got the point)
<blackeri> haha
<tigerzi> haha, nearly there ardariel!
<JesusIV> lol
<blackeri> it's ok
<chix0r> lol
<Nukita>
<justfornothing> teehee
<GirlxSuicide> lmao
<tigerzi> blackeri: how did you come up the name blackeri? it's got a lovely sound to it.
<65536> i'm inviting everyone to check out my gallery :shy: ... ; )
<justfornothing> :
<blackeri> tigerzi: thanks As I said before, i just took a name I loved (Keri) and played around with it.. the name is a
merger of black + keri (not too hard to figue out i believe )
<Ardariel> tigerzi, justfornothing, yeah, I'm dumb...
<blackeri> Anyway guys, thanks all for coming, I have to go now
<chix0r> 65536: please don't spam out your own work in blackeri's featured chat dear
<Deirh> blackeri: Do you see yourself making a living just by your art in near future? Would you like to? And do you think
that when most of your art is doing commissions, you won't lose your love for it? (I always lost love for my work
<chix0r> thanks blackeri
<Nukita> ardariel: do not say that...
<chix0r> this channel will now close
<Deirh> noooo!
<chix0r> thanks for coming everyone
<blackeri> Deirh: I am not sure.. I think I could, financially wise, btu I am yet to decide if I want my passion to become my
every day obligation
<blackeri> thanks to everyone who came guys, it's been a real pleasure
<chix0r> watch out for more events soon
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

It was many things at
a time, really
<blackeri> and then I just worked on the project, gathering information, ideas etc
<blackeri> Unoficially, I can say that the Magnum icecream Seven Sins series influenced me to some extent as well
<lazybutt> lol.
<blackeri> I hope this answeers your question.
<lazybutt> Yes, thank you.
<AglioPh0bia> Blackeri, you are easily the best artist I have ever seen and my favourite on dA.com.
dissatisfied with your own work?
<blackeri> Aw thank you so much
start a work thinking it's looking quite good and then, after a while, I see nothing else but things to fix and improve
<blackeri> I think it's quite good for self-improvement though
<AglioPh0bia> If I may, which of your pieces is your favourite, then?
<blackeri> I think I like Ravene the most.
<blackeri> Thank you very much
digital art I have taken up at the age of 15 or so
<blackeri> I have had many inspirations throughout my life.. First I adored my grandma and my mom who painted with me
later, when I grew up and got to know all the traditional masters, I fell in love with Klimt, Mucha, Rembrandt, Malczewski...
<wolf1302> hello nice to meet you
<blackeri> After a long break, I am working on Gluttony right now. I think I will be finished within 3 weeks. Afterwards I
will be doing Wrath and thats it for Deadly Sins
<wolf1302> cant wait to see the great work. thanks
<sundayx> Firstly, I'd just like to thank you for participating in this featured chat. Your work has been a substantial
inspiration to so many people, you should be very proud
The time between submitting each of the "7 Deadly Sins" deviations has been quite lengthy; how long would you say you
take on average on each of the pieces then? Do you think you will perhaps create a tutorial on one of your pieces (if you
have time) for those aspiring to mimic particular areas of your style?
<blackeri> Thank you for the kind words.
incredibly tight lately.
Thank you
<blackeri>
<sucmfic> Heya. It's good to see you this evening.
member, who would it be and why? Also, with all these questions about the deadly sins, have you seen the film SE7EN
with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt?
<blackeri> I am not going to answer the first question, cause my boyfriend is here and watching the chat
seen the movie numerous times, I really love it!
<sucmfic>
<blackeri> I might have less time to comment on artwork, but I always try to do so, when somebody sends me a note about it
* breaking-reality nods
<blackeri> Thanks for the question
haven't simply found time for that activity.
<blackeri> I am a 100% ally, so it's night elves and humans for me
expansion comes
<Thoran> thanks alot for answering my questions
<blackeri> Oh, and as for class, I think I like hunters the most. It's just so much fun to have a pet!
<Ji-Owon> Hello! thanks for this opportunity to a great artist like youself. Your website says "coming soon" - wondering what
you will be putting up there? Anything like the walkthru for "The Predator"? - would love to see some more walkthru's
Where did the inspiration for the Predator come from (those vine like fingers and toes in particular)?
<blackeri> Oh it makes me ashamed to talk about my website, it's "coming soon" for 10 months now
really work on it and decide on the layout... As for walkthroughs, I was lately busy with making tutorials for a magazine
called ImagineFX by Future Publishing, therefore I could not really spend time on doing free time tutorials. I will be fixing
that soon though!
<Ji-Owon>
<blackeri> And as for The Predator, I just wanted to give the character clothes to make her more, well, predator like
a kind of bird for example
<blackeri> thank you
<Ji-Owon> cool thanks
there too
<blackeri> Yeah I have seen a cover for some Guild Wars addon, it was fantastic!
<blackeri> I was a part of one online gaming community and saw some artists on IRC posting links to their artwork
observed passively for almost a year before deciding to join myself
<Fleeples> Thank you! Is there any work which you've ever done that you've hated so much you didn't submit?
<blackeri> Plenty!
<Fleeples> Okay, thanks.
<lazybutt> Who's your boyfriend?
<blackeri> p-and-a
<lazybutt> Good answer.
<lazybutt> Thanks.
<lazybutt>
<wolf1302> Do you draw sketches on paper before you create the work on the compuer?
<blackeri> Not anymore. Scanning sketches is rather inconvenient for me. The only situation when I sketch, is when I do not
have access to my computer (i.e. school
<wolf1302> Thanx
<blackeri> Unfortunately, no estimated finishing time as of now
<blackeri> I started painting as a hobby.
started I used to make a load of them, but nowadays It's just usually 2-4 at a time.
<blackeri> Thank you Madalaine
ImagineFX jobs I have been proposed by the magazine's editor. Same goes for other jobs/publications.
<enialadam> Fantastic
<blackeri> Thank you
<AriandraRayne> First of all I'd like to say I love your work! It's really inspiring! 1. Did you learn to draw/paint through
trial and error or did you learn another way? 2. Did you ever trace things to learn? 3. How do you choose your color pallette
for each piece - do you use the color wheel?
<blackeri> 1. Yeah it was (and is) always a matter of practice for me. Digital art is fantastic this way - you can experiment
as much as you want and undo your moves when needed
just started taking live references instead, in form of my mom and brother
usually think of them straight in my headb efore starting to paint, therefore I always have them done before actually working
<blackeri> If I have to imrpove the colour palette I usually mix existing colour choices and see what I achieve through
making them blend freely
<AriandraRayne> Thank you! That is very helpful!
<Fleeples>
just came spur-of-the-moment? If so, did you submit it to DevaintART? Also, have you ever been completely flooded with
comments? (Don't worry, that'll be one of the weirdest things I'll ask you...) Another slightly strange question- have you
ever done a featured chat before now?
Finaly, what is your favourite thing about DevaintART? Thank you in advance.
<blackeri> Yeah I did
intent to actually finish it.. I just liked it enough to work a lot on it. As for being flooded, yeah, it usually happened
when I submitted something from the Deadly Sins
this, and I have to admit I am having great fun
<Fleeples> Thanks!
<justfornothing>
have been following your work for some time now, and one thing we’ve always speculated on would be the inspiration for
your characters. Are any or all of them modeled after people you know/have seen? Or do the faces just take shape as you go?
<blackeri> They are usually made up from my head
for example chin or interesting eyes, when painting a face.
Some
questions for you
books you can recommend on digital painting, perhaps some you used yourself? 3. Who are your favorite digital artists? 4.
Update your website!
<blackeri> Thank you very much, George
I would say Anry Nemo and Christophe Vacher, I just love them to bits
I couldn't live without it really
discovered by total accident through an online game
<Ji-Owon> Doh my question was just answered
<blackeri> I have been an anime fan myself, but I grew out of it I suppose, so I am not the best person to say why do people
really like it
movies
and school are sucking me dry
<Xeon1> cool thankx
<blackeri> I haven't ever considered this - I love digital art a lot and do not plan on leaving it
It's hard to say what was best in terms of profit per hour, cause usually the most paiid projects were a ridiculously big
amount of work
<Xeon1>
<j-cyka> First of all I am a big fan of yours^^! I wanted to ask you if your family always supported you - as an artist - and
if that has an effect on you anyway?
<blackeri> Yes, my family has been wonderfully supportive. I am an awfully moody person and they have always been there for
me to boost me
manage to continue working as much as now.
<j-cyka> Are your artworks also on another site than deviantart?
<blackeri> oh yes, I try to showcase my work in many places to get as many different critiques as I can.
<j-cyka> ok thank you very much
<blackeri> my biggest online gallery is deviantart though
<blackeri> thank you
