So yea, we get a lot of requests for web host info here. In an effort to mitigate that, post the hosts you know of. Preferably free ones, since they're more frequently requested.

For non-free ones, try to limit to ones that have support for more modern stuff (i.e. mySQL 4.1+, PHP 5.0/5.1, Ruby/Ruby on Rails). PHP4 hosts are a dime a dozen.

For any/all hosts you post, please indicate supported languages/db's, if any, and bandwidth/storage numbers. Also include any "catches" (i.e. mandatory adverts).

Once I get a good batch of 'em, I'll post a new sticky with a compiled list. :)

I really like Dreamhost. They're not cheap, but they've got really good packages and very good customer service.

Yea, I'm actually in the process of switching over to dreamhost.

It's a freakin' bargain if you use this guy's promo code. One year up front works out to something like $3.60 a month, two years up front is $4.60 a month. Granted after that it goes back up to $7.95 but for what you get it's a steal.

May be good if you need a site where you can host a video or audio clip, although you'll still need an HTML page as hotlinking is not allowed.

God help you. I and many others have unwisely selected Dreamhost to host our websites, only to be screwed out of hundreds of dollars by what seems to be a company run by teenagers just starting up a business. :|

My main problems with them were the constant switching of the MySQL servers, so almost every other hour my site was down because all the login information was invalid. Then their support department strikes me as the kind of people who try to fit a square peg in a triangular hole. Then, when you have finally had enough of their crap and try to cancel, they pull out every kind of stall tactic they can, furthering your debt. For me, I had to get my bank involved and am currently involved with a dispute, hoping that legal proceedings don't have to go through.

IMO, and in the opinion of many others, Dreamhost is fine if you know nothing about hosting and don't care about throwing money. Otherwise, A Small Orange or (mt) Media Temple or even TextDrive are a LOT better, if for a little more money.

I like (mt) Media Temple and have been using them for a decent amount of time. They're not free, but for what you pay you get some great service and very fast servers. The technology on the (ss) plans is considered dated by many, but (mt) usually upgrades it's shared server plans on a routine basis. Their (dv) plans are the best, IMO. The (ss) plans start out at $7.95/month and include your own IP, up to 5 additional domains, MySQL 3.4, PHP 4.4 and Apache 2. If you require any other software or would like updated versions, you can send in a request and more than likely they will go ahead and install it, depending on the schedule of their upgrade roll out. The (dv) gets you a dedicated virtual server with root access. It comes stock with everything included in the (ss) plus the Application Vault and some other goodies. You can have the NOC admins help you with your server or you can just do it all yourself.

(mt) has a long history in the design and creative fields of the WWW and pretty much cater to that demographic. You might have noticed some sites that you visit with "in partnership with (mt)" in some corner of their layout. You've probably visited a lot of sites hosted by them without realizing it :) I'm recommending them not because I get some kind of kick back (I don't), but because I honestly believe that (mt) is the best value for the money in regards to features and support. Customer service is top notch and I've had no problems with tech support. Most tickets were answered within the hour. Only problems I did have was some DNS issues when my domain was initially moved over and trying to access it through FTP.
