Well this was a thread from 2005 so the database table/row this was on probably lost some data. Oh well, still funny though

Don't necro threads.
It doesn't have any posts because during the switch to V5 (V6? I don't know) last year, a lot of forum threads lost all their posts.

Well, I'll post some tidbits in the necrothread anyway since people might come here looking for stuff.

1) Do not use PHP4, it's past its End of Life.
2) Screw anyone who points you to a bunch of tutorials. Copypasting code isn't learning.
3) Read the PHP Docs. Read the Language Reference, read the Function Reference. I've seen so many people trying to reinvent the wheel because they didn't take a good enough look at the docs to realize that there was an existing function that did what they needed.
4) Check out the Zend Framework. Again, it often prevents wheel-reinvention.
5) If you need to send emails programatically, screw mail(), use Swiftmailer.
6) Not really beginner-level stuff, but check out the SPL anyway. It's built-in to PHP and it's super-handy.
7) Your first PHP project will not be a hot new social network site or a thriving e-Commerce business.

good man! You provided some of the best advice I've seen so far. Congrats on leading people to the function and language references over tutorials. I also applaud you for reccomending swiftmailer and not reccomending PHP4. :D
