Self defence is using force to stop them. Ie, if someone is beating the shit out of you, you will need to take some force to stop it. Sometimes this in itself deters people, no one likes getting hurt, it'll also make them re consider their own safety, if you think just allowing someone to beat the crap out of you, with the possibility of SEVERE damage if not death ( I've seen a man get punched, one punch killed him ) is more appropriate than using force, you really haven't been in a situation like that.
You don't understand. Violence can be necessary while on the situation. But imagine that said person stopped hurting you, and you hurt them back. That's not self-defense as you aren't actually defending yourself.
Even still, that situation is usually protected by laws, antagonised is a reasonable for why someone would get revenge. We're human, but very animalistic. If someone beat the shit out of you, and left you, wouldn't you want to get some revenge?
Some people are stupid little shits who care more about who "wins" a confrontation more than they care about getting out that confrontation with least possible injury. For those of us who put our safety before our egos, retaliation is a tool that's helpful in some situations and dangerous in others, and certainly not to be used synonymously with self-defence.
Yes, your first sentence is true, I use to know a few bullies in secondary school like that. Although, as Self-Epidemic said, self defense is defending yourself if someone is tiring to or is beating the living shit out of you. |But, like I said some people will see if differently, my point proven.
