My only experience with My Little Ponies, is having the silly little toys when I was a very young child (early to mid 80's) and seeing some kind of cartoon about them at a neighbor's house where they had cable. They were a brief fad that seemed to fade away, until this recent explosion in their popularity.
I, like many others here on DA, was at first kind of amused and puzzled at the plethora of MLP based fanart. It made me wonder in passing as to what this craze was all about. Finally, I decided to do a little research into the matter, because I get curious about random things and research them.
Anyway, I learned that the My Little Ponies of my generation were a toy created first before any cartoon (instead of the other way around). The cartoon show itself was little more than an extended advertisement for the product. (Great to find out your childhood was for sale, huh?) This was the case for other cartoons like G.I. Joe and Transformers. (NOOOOO!!! Say it's not so!!!) I didn't know this until I researched them and gotta admit, it all seems kind of scummy.
Anyway, these advertising gimicks were not considered "successful" since they didn't rake in the billions expected I guess. Hasbro continued with the MLP toys and the bogus cartoons and then something happened, something the corporations were not expecting.
People outside of the target audience, particularly young men, took an interest not only in MLP but in using the imagery to create everything from porn to political cartoons. The way I see it, this is a fine example of the people taking back the culture from the corporations. I have a new appreciation of every MLP deviation I see now. Anarchy in Action Baby!!! Bronies! Pony peeps! You have my full support! Keep doing what you're doing. You make the world a better place. =0)

The explosion in popularity got a little out of hand. I heard they made something called BRONICON. I admit that is copyright, but not when Hasbro made that CON, witch is halfway impossible. (Although I am not sure that CON is true)
I have a male pony character that supposed to be GEN.3, but I usually draw him as anthro GEN.4. I have became a fan of this girls show because my friends were. I don't really want to loose them for not liking MLP:FiM.
I don't like Male Bronies that much, I admit that FiM for girls.
For the fanart, there's too much just for one little show. I hate porn, they still grow in popularity. :/
Well, thank you kindly! Nice to see someone not in the fandom not bashing us.
I give credit to Hasbro, too, for letting the fandom do what it does. And doing what I personally feel any good big wig should; listening to the fandom and embracing the people who will gladly pay them to continue. In no other fandom have I seen such, *ahem*, love and tolerance of the fandom. They're letting us post episodes on Youtube and make/sell custom stuff. They're making new products based on the fandom. They're giving us canon shoutouts and accepting fan names as official where possible.
I love this fandom. And I hope other big-wigs follow Hasbro's footsteps.
Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I wasn't sure what Hasbro's reaction was, so good to know. It is smart of them to allow it, also shows maturity since those who want to have a strangle-hold on a creation are... well... pretty greedy and childish. (Metallica, Anne Rice, Disney, etc.)
I am from a fandom that also seems to encourage fan art, Adult Swim, they even ask for it on their website and I have contributed to their Tumblr, etc. I am glad of that and hope they appreciate the work fans do, it seems that way. It gives me hope for humanity to hear that Hasbro is welcoming you all instead of trying to make a war against you. This should be the wave of the future. =0D
