Sex Offenders to be named on the web

:iconfourteenthstar:
Details of some high risk sex offenders could be published on the internet to alert parents, justice minister Cathy Jamieson has confirmed.

Offenders who fail to co-operate with the police or abscond from the address they have given could have their details published on a special website.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre publishes details of the UK's most wanted sex offenders.

The Scottish Executive is working to ensure it is available in Scotland.

As someone who's worked with sex offenders as well as sex crime victims, I'm not to sure how I feel about this. I've seen a lot of retributional attacks on various sides of the fence after court cases here, and I'm a bit concerned about how this is all monitored and controlled.

I believe this is a practice already in place in the USA, and wondered if anyone has any knowledge and/or experience of how this has impacted on geographic communities, as well as online communities?

Hey man, they can save a special section just for me, 'taking advantage of drunk or emotionally imbalanced chicks, offending them and never calling them', so roommates lock up your hot roommates or be with them all the time, cause i bes prowlin. And what about someone just wipping it out in public and smacking people in the face with indicency, i recon needs a section as well.. Public urinating?...

Tough to say or judge because some offenders will offend again while others wont.

in boston, ma.

all you have to do is type your zip code, and it will tell you all the sex offenders who are living in your area.

i thinks it's a good idea, they're too lenient on sex offennders. they're not supposed to be working around schools, but why is it that some sex offenders end up working as janitors in elementary schools? and then you find out on the ten o'clock news a seven year old was molested in the bathroom?

people need to be alerted of these things.
they're too hard on drug criminals, but too soft on sex crimes.

I have two boys.

One is 6 years old the other 8.

We live in Arizona.

As a father who loves his children, I can respect law enforcement's desire to see that we are informed about the whereabouts of these predators.

However, one day I came home to find a flyer on my door. The paper was a notice about a young man that spent a few days in jail for viewing kiddie porn. This guy was only 20 years old. His photo, address, and descriptions of his physical appearance as well as his crime was spelled out.

I couldn't hep but feel a bit sorry for this guy, who has less privacy than someone who was convicted for murder, that has finally gotten out of prison.

It didn't seem fair.

Here he is, just starting his life, and it's ruined no matter where he goes for the rest of his years.

Yes, kiddie porn is terrible, and so is his crime, but he didn't go out and rape a child. I can't help but wonder, if we are being too harsh on some, but then again, thoughts lead to actions.

I guess I am a bit torn on this issue as well.

However, I think we should continue to be, "better safe than sorry".

I don't think there is a conflict here, most would agree he deserves a harsh punishment. However, what you are rightly torn about is whether or not that punishment should follow him for the rest of his life so that he can never have a normal life when all other offenders, even murderers, aren't treated this way.
