I'm happy the Scots voted no, although, living in Manchester- I'd be happy if everywhere north of Birmingham broke away from the south so at least we'd be free of the tories.

Oh I bet Salmon was furious. I bet he went home and threw a chair through his whisky cabinet.

I'm frankly glad the people saw through his bullshit.

He is going to step down as First Minister and also resign from the SNP - www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-2…

I'm frankly appauled that 45% didn't see through it. Smug git.

The Yes campaign would probably have done a lot better if it didn't rely on one individual egotist.

Wouldn't you be flattered if your partner told you they were 55% in favour of staying with you! Warm fuzzies all around!

I had the thought maybe the people of the rest of Britain should now be given a vote about whether to kick the Scots out anyway. Fair is fair!

That snarking aside I am quite glad it has gone this way, and it also means I've won some money. I think common sense has prevailed.

Now that the 'Scottish Nationalism' of the Scottish National Party has been rejected, I'm wondering if the party should change its name in order to stay relevant. I suggest the OSSP (Other Scottish Socialist Party). I also recommend to the Scottish people a concept called 'capitalism'. It's very good, it's like independence for individuals. They should like it more than they do,  they invented it!

What has this got to do with Capitalism?

The Scots are sadly misled by socialists, which is not a system that advances general prosperity in the long run.
redruM-110's avatar
I'm a socialist (an English one, admittedly), and I was in favour of a no vote. Can you imagine all the Scottish left-wingers going and England being at the mercy of the tories, or 'New Labour' forever? Absolutely horrific.
intermetal's avatar
What are your beliefs precisely?
redruM-110's avatar
Precisely? Well that's tricky. In general: the world would be an inifitely better place if all tories and right-wingers dropped dead tonight. Controversial, I suppose, but true nonetheless...
intermetal's avatar
Well that's not going to happen, and you're not going to win over any wavers like that. (You might say 'controversial', others might say 'psychotic' and 'hateful'.) Perhaps you could define your ideology and say what makes it virtuous. What philosophical principle underpins it. Also what you mean by 'Tories and right wingers' and what is so bad about them that you wish their death? And why do you wish death on them rather than enlightenment? Do you think they are knowingly evil rather than either misinformed or basing views on faulty premises? If your views are so inherently superior, why not define them and make the case for them, and point out the errors in what you evidently oppose so zealously.

Please prove me wrong in my impression that Leftist are incapable of defending their views with logic and reason.

Everything in Britain is so watered down politically I doubt it's the socialism your thinking of.

The IRA were not Irish separatists, they wanted to make Northern Ireland (whose Protestant majority want to remain British) part of the Irish Republic. I don't believe I ever said that white terrorism was unimaginable, either.

You make it sound pretty simple, but the demographics show a more complex outcome.

Example, the region with the highest unemployment,  North Ayreshire, voted NO.  Most of the regions where the SNP garnered the highest number of votes in the 2014 European elections voted NO, and they also have the highest number of older people (it seems that, while they are very nationalistic, they don't trust an independant Scotland to be able pay the pensions they contributed to via taxation all their lives).

A BBC poll suggests that 16 - 17 year olds voted resoundingly yes with 71% voting YES. But as the age group was widened to 16 - 24 year olds, the yes vote was down to 51% Those regions with greatest youth populations (Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee also had the lowest voter turnout.

This BBC page has interesting information on voting demographics - www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-s…
