why does Israel always seem to launch attacks into Palestine a couple of months before an election?

Israel has killed the Hamas military leader in a targeted rocket attack in Gaza. [link]

"Israel confirmed it had targeted Ahmed Jaabari in an air strike on a car in Gaza City, warning it was only the start of an operation to target militant groups which was launched as the Jewish state prepares for general elections in January."

"Following the strike that killed Jaabari and his bodyguard, Israel pounded the strip with more than 20 others, killing another five people, two of them children, and wounding at least 45, Hamas health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.

The air strikes capped five days of rising tension in and around Gaza, which saw Israel killing seven Palestinians and militants firing more than 120 rockets over the border, injuring eight."

"Israeli army spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said the air strikes were just the start of an operation targeting Gaza militants and had been authorised by Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz"

"Israel's last major operation in Gaza began at the end of December 2008, just six weeks shy of general elections, when troops embarked on a 22-day campaign which led to the deaths of 1,400 Palestinians -- half of them civilians -- and 13 Israelis, 10 of them soldiers."

Are the Palestinians just fodder for Israeli elections...lets show how tough we are on Palestinian terrorists so we will bolster our vote?

Out of 650 rocket launches, only 28 have actually hit resdiential area,.This is due mainly to the "Iron dome" defence system which was largley funded by the United states. Thank you USA, you have saved many civilians lives.

Gazan groups fired over 100 rockets and mortars at Israeli cities and towns. A barrage against Sderot, timed to coincide with the morning commute to work, injured 3 people. One victim, physical education teacher Moshik Levy, was moderately wounded by shrapnel and glass from his car windshield which exploded in his face. A fourth person was injured while fleeing for cover, and five more people were treated for acute stress reaction. Two homes, one in Sderot and one in the Eshkol Regional Council, were damaged by direct rocket hits. United States Ambassador Dan Shapiro declared that his country "supports Israel’s right to defend itself and its citizens from these attacks.

This is happened before Israel Killed their "militant" so now answer me, why hamas started this before the elections?

Because hamas thinks that Israel will not fight back before the elections, because the people are divided and all that.

The only thing that the U.S. funding are the Iron Dome and the Arrow system. Both are missile defense systems. the Reason for this is that the U.S. wants Israel to respond in moderation toward the Arabs.

people seem to feel that my question is irrelevant and just want to argue about the rightness or wrongness of Israeli actions. I'm more interested in the timing of the actions. My cynical attitude is because I hate politicians, not because I hate Israelis, or support Hamas.

Politicians are scheming, heartless scum who use innocent people for their political advantage and this current situation is just another example of that. My main concern about Palestine is that it is a big playground for evil men.

People have a right to live in peace. Killing them, and destroying their homes and livelihoods is not a way to encourage that peace. Whoever does it is wrong and the reasons for when they do it bears examination.

okay, regarding your final question, then: how much are these actions going to bolster vote among moderate Israelis? it seems counter-intuitive to me.

I guess if the media is telling one that the rockets are raining down and your government is showing great strength by not tolerating it and sending in ground forces yet again, then these actions, if successful will measurably bolster the vote amongst moderate Israelis.

This same question (why now) is being asked by others.

Well so why they started it??? they had their own commerce before this as I told you, Why they chose to throw it away? they wanted those territories and Israel gave that to them, What are they doing with it? Nothing.
If Israeli people hate Arabs so much, Why there are so many Arabs over there living just ok?

You didn't understand my question... my question was a Rhetorical question... If Israeli people really hated Arabs then many other Arabs wouldn't be living in Israel in peace just like you said.
My question put light to into it.

Well you asked me many times yourself about Israel and I did give you an answer, but yeah don't answer me because we know what the answer is.
So the other question is... why the Palestinians started to throw more rockets than usually do before the elections? usually the throw just a few, now they throw hundreds why?

I have just been watching news, and Hamas and right-wing Israelis are both fucked.

Too bad they couldn't all gather in a deserted place somewhere and slug it out. I feel for the citizens of both countries who are innocent bystanders and victims in a very dangerous 'pissing up the wall' contest.

Update: 30 thousand Israeli reservists were mobilized.
for comparison, in Operation Cast Lead and the Second Lebanon War the number was 10 thousand.

also, Today more than two hundred rockets were fired to Israel from Gaza.
First time since the Gulf War missile was fired at Tel Aviv.

Why does Israel launch attacks into </i>Palestine??</i> News flash: since last Saturday, more than 120 rockets have been fired from Gaza into southern Israel. Innocent civilians have been killed. Babies have been killed.

When Israel retaliates, as they should, it will be against the terrorists, not the civilians of Gaza. Israel has the right to defend its citizens against violence. If Gaza would cease it's attacks on Israel, Israel would have no cause to harm one person in Gaza.

yes I read that before I posted this topic. What happened to the whizz-bang new anti-rocket defence so proudly proclaimed in this forum a few months ago. Did it fail?

When Israel retaliates, it will be business as usual, again ...and at election time ...again.

Israel's rocket defense has stopped some rockets, but that just means that the terrorists in Gaza have tried to fire many more rockets than just 120 in the last five days. You think this is okay somehow?

Let me ask you: do you think Israel has the right to defend its citizens? It doesn't matter that the elections are coming because Israel did not start this conflict. It's the choice of the Palestinians to attack Israel at this time.

[link] - 5th Iron Dome battery now deployed. It's in greater Tel Aviv area. Since Nov 14, Iron Dome interceptors hit 90% of their targets in sky.

p.s. the system does not target rockets which it calculates will hit open areas.

No, I have already stated that a couple of times at least in this topic.

" It doesn't matter that the elections are coming"

It didn't matter about the elections the last time there was an incursion into Palestine by ground troops either. It just happened to occur around 6 weeks prior to the election ...like now.

Occupation of Palestinian land my foot. The land of Israel is the historic homeland of the Jewish people. The word "Palestine" is a Romanized form of the word "Philistine," and was first used by the Romans to try to deny the Jewish association with Judea. The Philistines were not Arabs.

The pathetic part is that, although Palestinians are really no different from other Arabs, the government of Israel treats Palestinian Arabs better than any Muslim government does. Look it up. Palestinians have no rights in Syria, Jordan, Egypt, etc. In Israel, they have the same rights that Jewish Israelis do--the right to vote, to worship, to serve in the military or the government, to have the same jobs, etc.

In Gaza, the semi-autonomous Israeli territory, the Palestinians are given the right to elect their own government and are not subject to the Israeli government. Thus, the poor situation in Gaza has nothing to do with the Israelis. The Palestinians asked for autonomy and they received it--and then voted in a radical totalitarian terrorist organization to govern them. Whose fault is it that they live in poverty?

because most Israelis are at heart, pacifists, socialists, and leftists, and if not for the imminent threat of attack by arabs, persians, and other non-jews, they'd never vote likud or kadimah.

So Bibi is doing what his protege Ariel Sharon made a career of, stirring up a small scale conflict to bring back memories, and get the inner solider out of all of them.

We keep hear that Israel is "surrounded by enemies", and Likud depends on this to win elections, and to keep US support and back republican intrests stateside with AIPAC.
