According to a Republican senator from Missouri, women should not be allowed to have abortions when they are raped because women can't get pregnant when raped.
This is mostly funny, but also somewhat sad. Of course now he claims he misspoke, but Senator Akin claimed:
"First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy after rape] is really rare," Akin told KTVI-TV in defense of his stand that rape victims should not be allowed to access abortions. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
So women can choose whether to get pregnant or not! Whoa, who knew that? A woman can just deny sperm that's from rapists, duh!
It's hilarious to hear, but somewhat sad that this is one of our senators and he likely will be reelected. Where does one learn that women do not get pregnant from rapes? Is this common knowledge? It's really screwed up, whether one supports abortion or not.
I've heard of that, and a Dutch politician said almost the same thing recently, after this debacle, so he should have known better.
It's kind of stupid really. Of course, many rapists will use a condom, but they're not all that reliable so pregnancies after rape do still occur. I've heard of rape kits where victims get something like a morning-after pill, to reduce the possibility of a pregnancy even further. But I suppose there are still a lot of women around who are afraid to report it, and try to forget what happened, thus ignoring the possibility of a pregnancy and it might already be too late for an abortion.
I'm not saying the fetus doesn't have a right to live or any such thing, but you have to remember also, that some victims might already have a family, a partner. Will he be willing to raise the child of the man who has hurt his wife so as his own, who will continually remind her of that man? How many women who have no choice but to keep their child to due to whatever reason, worry (reasonably or not) that if their child is a boy, his father will have passed on his violent genes?
I'm somewhat of a feminist, so I believe in the woman's right to decide over her own body, she always has the right to say no at any given time. I don't particularly justify abortion, but I think sometimes we have to keep the woman's rights in mind too, instead of only thinking about the children involved.
As an actual rape victim I find this absurd. I was raped at 18 and I did get pregnant. I didn't get an abortion because my family was against it. But saying that a woman can't get pregnant from rape is ridiculous. It's not like a woman (as you said) can just refuse the sperm or say "excuse me mister rapist, could you not ejaculate inside of me?" it's just so stupid!
intercourse is intercourse, except rape is just forced intercourse. and intercourse is used for re-productive purposes. and what does re-production do? makes babies.
B-but that little mass of cells and tissue is totally a person and so rape victims can't have abortions because they're totally murdering the shit out of that heavy period!
I heard that if you have sex in the cowgirl position while ovulating, the egg can actually fall through the guy's penis and get his balls pregnant. That's why it's good to tie an elastic band around the testicles so that the egg can't get through.
