New Company wants to mine asteroids

"Peter Diamandis and colleague Eric Anderson have formed Planetary Resources Inc., the world’s first asteroid-mining business.

“We’re now going to bring the solar system to within our economic sphere of influence,” Anderson said, standing at a podium in front of a banner that read “Redefining Natural Resources.”

Basically, these guys are planning to mine asteroids in Earth Orbit. Do you think it'll work, or is it too ambitious?

I can't imagine that those asteroids would contain resources of sufficient value to justify the tremendous cost of such an undertaking. It would be very interesting indeed if they could somehow make this venture profitable, but I'm definitely not going to invest in it.

Really? I can't see how this is going to be successful at this point in time- I think considering we're struggling to even get into space at the moment there is no chance of mining any other place.
The principle though I have somewhat issue with- if the asteroid is habitable then we shouldn't try it there- if it isn't then make sure it's safe and won't upset planetary orbits (as a reduction of mass could).

I remember some iPod game I had where you had to mine asteroids near your spacecraft while defending the mining nodes from alien attacks. Great game.

A question just as important as the costs but brought up less is "will it be feasible to have humans mine it?" Unless there are some robotic mining techniques that I'm unaware of, you'd have to transport a large group of astronauts to these asteroids, and make it so they can survive the harsh conditions as they do the mining.

holy crap thats so smaaart :D They wouldn't really make much of a profit though, what with the cost of getting stuff into space, and then back laiden with asteroid bits. But all together, the idea is genius, as asteroids, being barren, have nothing to lose, as opposed to earth which has hundreds of thousands of thriving ecosystems.
