When facing a war, who should we listen to? The Administration or the Commanding Officers?

In World War II, General Patton advised that the Allies should not just stop at West Germany but take the fight clear to Moscow. It would have been more costly but it could have also prevented the Cold War. We didn't do it because there was the moral standard about fighting civies along the way.

General MacArther said the same thing by taking the fight to Beijing during the Korean War. Had we taken his suggestion, we would not have a trading partner that is a tyrannical country and we wouldn't have to put up with that bitch, Kim Jong Il. We didn't do it because it was a UN war.

Because of Vietnam, the Powell Doctrine was made so that if the US has to go war, they must go out full force with no hold backs.

In Iraq, the reason why it's a total religious shitfest is because we didn't send enough soldiers to begin with. [link]

So if there was another war, should we listen to our commanding officers and make the sacrifice to insure that there will be an actual lasting peace?

How would it have prevented the Cold War :?

Commanding officers. Patton wasn't the only nor highest ranking one.

Ts'ao Ts'ao advises that the political officers should be kept out of the picture when it comes to fighting the war.

Uhm, I'm no history expert, but I seem to recall something about the USSR being our ally during World War 2, and sustaining the worst military losses of any Allied country. So how do you think that would have made us look? "We backstab our Allies after having bravely stood by our side to fight for our cause, it's the American way!"

And, again, I'm no expert on history, but isn't the reason we never attacked Russia or China directly because we didn't want to engage in a direct military conflict with them? Now, certainly, there were reasons for that. I think it's naive to simplify it and say, "Had we done that, we wouldn't have to deal with China or Kim Jong-Il today." It would have changed the entire dynamic of the most dangerous stand-off of our time, who knows what could have happened?

But that aside, I think your suggestion is devastating to the philosophy behind this country. After all, this is supposed to be a country for the people, by the people. And military leaders have no link to any constituency. They should act in their capacity as advisers and servants, but not policymakers.

"In Iraq, the reason why it's a total religious shitfest is because we didn't send enough soldiers to begin with."

I think the best that could be said about that statement is that it's an oversimplification.
