Our school propose a debate for us, students to realize what are the pros and cons of Death Penalty. Half of the population tend to approve death penalty since it brings justice to the victim. But then, the other half disagrees since it would be better to give the criminal another chance.

So I'm asking your opinions about this issue. Are you pro or anti the penalty?

As a government, killing a murderer, is like saying it's okay to kill people if they deserve it. When does one deserve to be killed? Where do you draw the line?

that's a very complicated topic.
Personally i am against the death penelty. it doesn't bring justice to the victim. the criminal can't learn from it, or be ';punished'. its just revenge. i reckon the only time that the death penelty is justified is someone who has commited genocide.
I guess you coudl say that the death penelty is good, because it gets criminals 'out of the way' and they are gone to less expense to the given country, but i still don't beleive those are good enough reasons to kill someone.

Not true. It costs much more to execute someone than it does to incarcerate them for life, due to legal fees, the costs of running the rarely used execution facilities, and all the other administrative fees associated with executing a prisoner as opposed to simply imprisoning them alongside hundreds of other criminals.

There is, as we know, a philosophy which denies the infinite. There is also a philosophy, pathologically classified, which denies the sun; this philosophy is called blindness.

How about drug induced guilt? LSD? Or, force them to listen to Venetian Snares whilst on shrooms? (YouTube Szamar Madar if you don't know what I'm on about.) That would guarantee a punishment.

I am against the death penalty since it is a permanent punishment and there is no taking it back when a mistake is made and there are a lot of mistakes made.

I think there are several issues.

1. Do you really want to give the state the right to kill citizens? I don't trust my government with my taxes, let alone my life.

2. What happens if evidence emerges after the execution that the person is innocent? You cannot revive a dead person in the way that you can release an innocent person from prison. Since they have been killed, should you now execute the judge/jury/executioner for killing an innocent person?

3. If it's wrong to kill someone (the victim), then why is killing someone (the murderer) right? If killing people is wrong, then it's wrong.

Do you consider religious act part of the issue?

Here are some ideas:

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
A message from the bible which tells us that what's done shall be payed with the same material of what's lost.

Do not do unto others the things you don't want to do unto you
Confucius' Golden Rule means that you must accept the punishment to die since you take someone's life.

I'm still a little brain dead to go into depth of how I feel about the death penalty. I can tell you, NJ recently got rid of it.

Big point. That's why the government publish so many appeals before registering death penalty. Still, the same problem occur.
