CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico -- More than a month after President Felipe Calderón sent more than 2,000 soldiers to this troubled U.S.-Mexico border city, execution-style murders remain commonplace -- and usually unsolved -- as heavily armed drug cartels battle for control of lucrative drug-smuggling routes into the United States.

(More than 15 dead, and many more wounded.)

Police Capt. Saul Pena Lopez had been rushed to the hospital by then, but the blood-soaked pavement suggested he wouldn't be there long.

Under the guard of machine-gun-toting Army soldiers— sent here to quell a record outbreak of mafia shootouts, kidnappings and unsolved murders— the father of four died in the hospital from multiple gunshot wounds before midnight Tuesday. He was being buried Thursday.

All along the Mexican side of the USA-Mexican border, from Juarez to Tijuana, you can hear the ringing out of gunshots, as if you were in the Middle East. Some times that violence spills over onto the American side, as when a top Mexican policeman from Juarez stumbled acrossed the bridge to the USA and collapsed from his gunshot wounds. Kidnappings, cross border rapes, and shootings are so abundant that the Mexican soldiers not only can't stop it, but have been known to put on ski masks and become the perpitrators of these heinous crimes.

The border violence has curbed tourist trade in all of the cities from Juarez to Tijuana and south to Ensenada, Mexico, and is hurting the already impoverished economy of the Mexican border.

Is anybody planning a trip to Mexico for vacation, and would the news of these border shootings and kidnappings cause you to alter your plans? What do you think the governments of Mexico and the USA can do to end this "Border War", and protect the everyday citizens?

Well, that pretty much proves ~Reddbecca entirely wrong. :|

I don't know :crying:
I just thought I'd bump the thread since we've been flooded with all these shitty ones and a half-decent one got no replies.

The only way to stop this violence is for the government to assert more direct control over the obviously lucrative and hazardous trade in dangerous drugs.

Those who know history might cast their minds back to the problems which confronted America during the prohibition-era 20s. Gang violence, police assassinations, widespread smuggling, all that good stuff you can see in The Untouchables, was the direct result of prohibiting a very lucrative trade, rather than swallowing moralistic pride and placing a dangerous substance like alcohol under government oversight.

Without government oversight, the trade is run by whoever has the means to exert control over it. As we learned from Al Capone and the stateside rise of the Italian mob during the 20s, that person will be the most vicious, violent, cunning and ruthless one on the scene. So long as the industry is profitable, new bosses will keep rising up as fast or faster than you can take out the old ones.

We need to show that we've learned from the example of prohibition, and place the illegal drug trade under government regulation and oversight. I think everyone will agree with me that extinguishing the illegal drug trade is not feasible. The question is therefore whether you want this lucrative trade in dangerous substances regulated by violent criminals, or by the government. That's a question with only one reasonable answer.

A feeble ten second question based on creative truth and linguistic subtlety will always sound better than ten minutes of factual dissertation. =(

This is very much a hot, shooting war. Just like a scene from a bad, Hollywood movie, cars loaded with armed thugs go down the street shooting and assasinating political figures, soldiers, cartel members, law enforcement, and innocent civilians, especially in Juarez, Mexicali, and Tijuana.

Not only is it lethal, it is destroying the cross-border economy of turism and trade. One does not want to go into Mexico looking wealthy, or be caught by nightfall. You may be kidnapped by cartel members, thugs, or law enforcement alike.

This was my topic for the MUN actually..

We had about 5 resolutions on this topic, and finally came up with a few ideas.. obviously they're not perfect but...

We suggested some better form of border patrol where there'd be a regular rotation of personnel to avoid corruption..
Also some form of port patrol and control in the waters between Mexico and the US.
A stronger UN presence, especially some kind of intelligence service to locate..
Better paid police to decrease corruption.
Brazil's buy back policy... (worked well in Brazil)
Hmm there were more but i forgot...

[link] The Cross of Juarez

This has always been the bane of Mexico. Mexico's law enforcement, politicians, and judiciary have always been so blatantly, street level corrupt that even the citizens of Mexico can find no justice without paying for it. Women, in Juarez, are just pawns of the police and drug cartels, and have been murdered by the hundreds (some claim thousands).

Yeah we touched on that too. But yes, the Mexican government and its institutions are very corrupt and better payment is necessary to lessen it.. I also think US government should lend a hand, even if temporarily, as the problem is also affecting the US.

Ths affects me because I have family just a an hour away from the border in San Felipe, Mexico. I remembered on my last Christmas Vacation down there that there were tons of army trucks full to the brim with Mexican marines. Since Mexicali is one of the hot zones, I'm not sure if I'm able to see my family this summer or later for th matter.
