2 AM Nightclub Cerfew Lockouts In Melbourne City, Australia

[x]
~alcholocaust:iconalcholocaust: May 9, 2008, 3:57:39 AM
"As most people should be aware by now, the city of Melbourne will soon be hit by 2am curfew law. I have been asked
by many, many people about my opinion on the issue but no matter what my opinion is, it will not make anything
change nor will it change people's minds.

But for those of you with an interest (or concerns) in the issue, I have compiled a short-list of what i think the
positives and negatives of this 3 month trial will be.

Positives:

* The only realistic positive is the fact that this lock out will be a success in keeping people locked out from
venues at 2am.

Negatives:

* The Crown Casino is a large venue which faced having its alcohol serving tenancies shut down one by one due
to the massive violence in the building, is hypocritically exempt from this law.

* People locked out from clubs at 2am will either go home or want to continue drinking, and where could they go?
To the casino! Alas, theoretically 10,000 drunks could potentially flock the gambling sections of the Crown between
2am-3am.

* In relation to above point, 10,000 drunks drinking in the casino, might even be tempted to have a gamble, WIN!
WIN! for the Government! Hoorah!!!

* In relation to above point again, expect to see more younger problem gamblers.

* People already accusing this law as Draconian.

* People already accusing the government of taking away their freedom, rights, civil liberties.

* The ques for taxis between 2am-3am will be MASSIVE. I expect to hear violence soar at taxi ranks.

* Intoxicated people who cannot drive home and are sick, may need to be sick outside a venue, when they cannot
get back in, they may be violent.

* Door staff will have their wages cut/venues will lose money from their door, hence increasing door charge.

* Smokers who cannot leave after 2am for a smoke, could get aggro and use that as an excuse, hence more problems.

* Expecting several thousand party goes to be out simultaneously between 1:30am-3am could have severe consequences.

* Bouncers everywhere will have problems/arguements with people either wanting to get in, or wanting to get back in.

* This law totally disregards everything an RSA Certficate stands for.

* Venues may introduce late night happy hours a couple hours before the curfew to "steal" patrons from other venues
before the clock ticks over to 2am and keep them there. Hence affecting smaller businesses.

* Bands, staff, dj's, etc etc will not be able to leave work and go somewhere for a drink after shift.

* People will not be able to meet their friends at other venues, or even worse, if someone "ill" disappears and
you go outside to look for them to make sure they are safe and they are not there, YOU will be locked out while
they could still be inside, in a dangerous situation and you will not be able to go back in and get them.

* People will be drinking earlier, and clubs may even open earlier to close earlier.

* This could boost illegal "at-home" pubs.

* Our stretched police force will become even more strecthed with the influx of people on the streets after 2am.

That is all for now.

Generally speaking, it's upto the business how well they impose responsible serving of alchohol, and the patron
is responsible for the consequences of their own actions too. If the police force wasn't so busy driving around
in their nice little police cars booking grandparents for driving 3km over the speed limit and were instead on
foot, visible in presence, fighting crime, then i guarantee you the current crime rate around the city's night venues would
drop on a large scale. The solution is simple. But obviously $$$ speaks louder than words. But don't blame the
police for enforcing this regulation, they didn't make this law, the government did, so send them an e-mail
if you don't like it."

What are your thoughts on these lockouts?

NO NO NO NO NO.
I don't want that to happen, its called a NIGHTclub, not a MIDNIGHT-ONLYclub.
This really is unfair, Victoria is trying to promote itself as the best state in Australia, and it wouldn't work that way.
Espeically that has been already ranked as the most livable city in the world twice in a row.

All i know is that no-one can do anything to change this.

Lulz, stupid law. They should go in for 24-hour drinking laws, like us!

I have vivid memories of my brother crawling home at four am to vomit in the bathroom. :) I think it might be interesting to see the effects on people's drinking habits that this curfew has.

Hmm, undecided really.

The issue I have with imposing universal clsing times of venues is that, as you say, it tends to canalise people into a particualr part of the city at a partivcular time. You get an enormous number of people under thue influence in one place annd whilst the najority are likely to be resposnisbkle, with that number of people there is always going to be trouble.

This tends to affect smaller places more. I gre up in canterbury in the UK, which is something of a one horse city really, with one high street, lots of pubs but only two clubs. Under the old laws, come 11PM everyone descended onto the high street going home or to the club...it was pretty terrifying at times. That said, a similar thing happended when Ilived in Bristol, which was a much bigger place.

how does lack of drinking = more gambling?

That certainly wasn't the main problem complete prohibition caused in the US.

You don't know that that will happen until it does though. It's a three month trial, right? So you can see what the effects will be. You could say it might increase gambling - but it might decrease drug-related rape.
