I wonder if this is one of the goverment's April Fool ?
umm, maybe not.
"The Malaysian Government wishes to announce the introduction of a Rounding Mechanism to the nearest multiple of 5 sen for over-the-counter payments to be fully implemented by 1 April 2008.
The Rounding Mechanism only applies to the total amount of a bill and not on individual items. In the Rounding Mechanism exercise, the total amount of a bill which ends in 1, 2, 6 and 7 sen will be rounded down while the total bill which ends in 3, 4, 8 and 9 sen will be rounded up to the nearest multiple of 5 sen.
The implementation of the Rounding Mechanism brings benefits to both businesses and customers. Businesses will be able to save on handling costs and for customers, it will make payment faster and more convenient."
Is there any big difference between RM100.01 and RM100.05? I'd rather say keep the change. Well I know some country like Saudi Arabia which use coins anymore. I mean even if the item is 90.90Riyal, and you give 100R note, the casher would just give you a cheap sweet as a change. Forreal.
In this case, for the soon-to-be the New Rounding Mechanism in Malaysia, I have a premonition that the coins will be tossed on streets shortly.
Either you or me, or both of us are confused. But If you gave a 100R note for 90.90R bill, you should get 0.10R change, if the currency doesn't carry a 0.10R denomination then obviously you CAN'T be given the change, so it disappears effectively (well, the company now has your money).
Same thing happens in NZ, we use dutch rounding, (is it called that?) which is as you described. The smallest denomination that we have is 10c, so in the case which you cite I'd be given 10c change. If the bill was 90.95 then I'd have to lose 5c. The trick on that is to pay electronically therefore you wont lose 5c.
The company definitely isn't going to forfeit 5c due to not being able to physically give you 5c change, so it has to be rounded to the nearest possible number. Or you could shop elsewhere.
Man, sometimes I wish I hadn't dropped out of high school. I have no idea what the fuck is going on here, could you explain this real slow like for us simple minded folk?
