In reality, the idea of selling your soul to the devil is not part of the bible, just a folklore added to Christian faith. It was popularize by Faust (although of course there are many examples simular before the faust tale), where a man sold his soul to the devil to get what he wants.
But its a good effort to give a devil a motive rather then an entity who is evil just because he fell from the heavens out of pride.
