Alter Ego (Changing Humanity)

:iconnoremac-demigod:
This is a question that I've struggled with as a furry, though several recent episodes in my life have brought it back up.

If given the chance to alter, or abandon, humanity, would you?

This has led me from one topic and example to the next; cybernetics, bio engineering, abortion, sexuality, gender, and of course, near and dear to my heart, species.

My most major concern in this analysis was that I knew that I wanted to remain human, and so I needed to know what being human meant to me.

Ultimately, I concluded that I would be willing to make any alterations with a single exception. If I successfully procreate, I want my child to be as I was when I was born, without the alterations that I may have made.

For my part, I see that as humanity; not merely the ability to generate a human child through successful procreation, but the will to do so.

Any way, I'd be happy to hear your own thoughts, though I doubt I will be here for much more than light conversation. Enjoy.

rather weird conundrum. how about we alter humans so that unselfish behaviour feels good and being selfish feels bad? that'd be fun.

It would be fun, but does that alter their humanity?

Humans are selfish animals to begin with. this'd turn them more as some moral morons want to see them. what can I say,I'm a dreamer!

All humans are selfish? That's just part of being human?

of course, a non selfish being can not evolve, there are variations but no exeptions.

:iconnoremac-demigod:
I don't know if that's true. How can you prove that nothing evolves without being selfish?

By common sense; something your question indicates you lack, so let me explain it using House:

Three cavemen see a dude with a spear running towards them, one flees, one fights, one (unselfishly) invites him to mammoth dinner. The last one sadly didn't live long enough to make little cavemen.

:) I truly enjoy your pleasant attitude. You are a masterful teacher.

However, let me ask one more, clarifying question:

If these three cavemen all sit in a cave, one with food, two without, in the middle of winter, and the one with food acts as you say, selfishly, and the other two starve, will this band of cavemen produce any offspring?

I must admit I don't really struggle with the question of 'what is humanity'. To me, it is irrelevant in almost every capacity I can think of. The definition of 'humanity' doesn't change my behaviour in any way.

However, would I augment myself if I could? Of course. I would love to remedy deficiencies, alter aesthetics, and otherwise implement useful modifications if it were at all possible. Although I love my body as is and wouldn't needlessly discard perfectly-functioning body-parts, I would love to have a storage compartment in my leg. I would also love a computer-brain interface embodied in a cybernetic right eye. Does being more machine than man affect my humanity? Maybe in the eyes of others, but as I said, it doesn't bother me.

 That's why we're not the same individual. Or, it's one of the reasons.

However, I have to ask, what doesn't bother you? Do you not feel that these alterations make you less human, or do you not mind being non-human?
