They were originally Frenchmen driven off the land by Spaniards. They were actually democratic, as well as egalitarian and freed slaves from the ships they captured. While some were criminals others were privateers and pirated with the backing of the Crown. Sure, they killed people, I hold illusions about that, but so did many of the famous people in history.
People enjoy the thought of outlaws and rebellions.
And actually, terrorists do get admired...just the ones that win, though...but those are usually put in the books as 'revolutionaries'.
