Deviantart Malware/Adware/Spyware Alert!

Some bastard (I don't know who) is going around hiding spyware and adware programming in deviation links, so when you click on a certain piece of art, the program secretly downloads itself onto your computer and then bombards you with constant popups and redirections to fraudulent competition sites.

This unfortunately happened to me when I clicked on a friend's latest deviation and got constantly redirected to some fraud online competition to win vouchers/phones/etc. It has taken the good part of a day to finally (I hope) fix the fucking problem.

So you've been bloody warned people! Update your malware protection programs and get your anti-popup systems in check, cause this thing is probably spreading it's way through deviantart right now!

I had something try to get on my computer when DA updated but I use Kaspersky and it stopped it. I don't let anyone use my computers at all since I got tired of reprogramming them.

Too many users do not know how to properly use a computer, let alone use the internet. I hardly ever have problems like this, and if I do, I know exactly how to deal with them quickly and efficiently. There are so many people who send their computers to technicians for shitty reasons that they must make a killing.

Seems like to me, that you failed to see the warning signs and had no protection from it.

Only problem was, that there were no warning signs. This thing is hidden very well and you don't know that they're on your computer until they've installed in the background. And for your information, I fixed it myself, so I'm not a complete dunce with technology.

Seems like it slipped under the radar of the program. What are you using?

Malwarebytes, but the program never registered any problem. I did 3 scans with it and it never registered any malware. Usually it's stuff like spyware or trogans and PUPS it picks up on really well. After I did the system restore, the problem vanished and I was able to properly update malwarebytes to the latest version.

And nobody wants your shitty attitude, so you've been warned. If you get this thing on your computer, don't come crying to me.

DA warns you about outgoing links, so it should be fairly evident when something is 'disguised' as a deviation link. That said, it's still possible for malware to hide in ads, or that you've installed something shit without realizing and it now hijacks random links in your browser.

edit: or at least, it used to. Interestingly enough I went to test this and no longer get the outgoing link warning. Maybe they did away with/broke it?
CrispyLettuce's avatar
Yeah, the got rid of the outgoing link warning a while ago.

It might not be true of all browsers, but Firefox at least will show you the web address when you hover over a link, so there's that at least.

I remember they announced they'd remove the outgoing link page long ago.
Though it still is on mobile.
dinoloverXX's avatar
Not sure with that one. You just can't tell which link is a dud one these days.

Not a complaint, but what you can do is report any inappropriate ads by following this link: FAQ #930: I'm experiencing problems with advertisements on DeviantArt. What can I do?

Until then, you can use AdBlock to filter out some of the inappropriate ads.

Yeah right, Deviantart help desk does shit-all.

It's not the fault of deviantART at all. It's the fault of cyber-criminals who have been implementing malicious malware embedded in ads.

What Maddox said and yes, some of us didn't know about ad block plus for years until we're told about it.
