Why is violence and gore okay but sex isn't?

AlterIris's avatar
Why is it in movies, I can see someone getting tortured and killed,.. but a sex scene is often times "controversial" or all out banned..

So, I guess killing people, hurting and disrespecting others, and hate are all okay... but, oh, two consenting people that love each other and showing it.. That's ABSURD!

What are we teaching people? Hate, violence, and killing is okay, but love is something to be shamed. It's sad that, coming from someone who can't stand gore, I still have to use an internet "parent's guide" to decide if a PG-13 movie will have fingers getting cut off.....

On the other hand, a movie that flashes a nipple or penis.. "OH NO!", that gets flagged as restricted...

It's the same on DA... I saw a photograph, that WASN'T rated mature, that had a person's eyes gouged out..Sadly I've seen plenty more... Yet a boob WITHOUT sexual content will get your art taken down.. (or a penis etc.).

I just don't even...

American society is different from European society. Both have beliefs that are opposites to each other.
Also sex is not love.

I don't know... but being raised in this society, its not like I'm complaining. I wasn't equipped with the morals that would keep me from feeling extremely uncomfortable when so much as a small sex scene (that doesn't actually show anything) plays while my parents are in the same room. It just feels wrong...

You should read Brave New World. Its a book that explores what society would be like without social boundaries that hide sex. It seemed a bit creepy when I first read it, but I imagine it wouldn't be too far off.

The gouged out eye sounds really gross and should seriously have a mature warning.

Because people's religious texts say that smiting one's enemies is fine as long as you don't enjoy sex.  That's pretty much all there is to say about it.

Because our country is the most hypcritical place known to man. We don't have sex in movies yet we have porn.

there are sex scenes in movies though.

if there was actual sex in movies, it would be considered porn.

true but usually they're blocked out.

All adult rated and they need to get rid of both.

Though women's breast is not a sex item, blame male society and women exploitation as for making mammary glands for babies as a so called "sex feature"
Stupid irony. There are  a lot of indigenous cultures whom expose their breasts and portray it correctly.
I envy their society's mind frame and respect for a woman's body then here where people delude themselves. Being brainwashed or spoon fed society's image poison of lies.
The vagina only has to do with sex. A man's pride certainly does.

Society sells sex for sure, its everywhere, its called "image."
Women advertise it and men sell it.
Our society will always have an issues and it doesn't have to be portrayed in obvious ways of censorship. Trashy wearing clothes and small pie sized brain people whom think that's hat being an adult is and what kids see it, believe that's what makes you popular.

Yeah it's a problem like violence.
But no one will do anything about it but "bark" for they are hypocrits. Its advertised in every way.

Obviously, USA are ruled by Zardoz:

"The Penis is evil! The Penis shoots Seeds, and makes new Life to poison the Earth with a plague of men, as once it was. But the Gun shoots Death and purifies the Earth of the filth of Brutals. Go forth, and kill! Zardoz has spoken."

-Nobody is "shaming" love and love is not equivalent to sex.
-Many movies have been rated R or NC-17 solely because of violence, especially if there's blood or if it's realistically portrayed. And in classic stories of good and evil, or superheros and villians, history and war, violence is needed to tell a story and even present a morale. Someone's genitals are not.
-You really want hormone-infused teenagers and potentially kids 12 and under who sneak in to be able to see penises and vaginas in a PG13 movie?

It's okay to want violence censored too but don't act like sex should be free for everyone to see.

WELL SAID! And I agree
Unfortunately, kids are still getting pregnant though. Society is over sexed just by image then seeing trash/porn (a lot of them admit watching it online. Clearly parents don't put on parental blockades on their digital devices....-.- )

I think none of tit is okay but sex is a hell of an issue our society excepts without true censorship-and that's not showing it at all.
They have enough tv shows that portrayal it even if their bodies are censored. How many kids are running through the tv, channel searching and running into this sH*t?

Thank you, glad you agree.
This certainly isn't the first time someone's made this complaint/argument before, esp. here on dA. These people, (can't verify age but most likely in their teens) seem to live with an exuberant sense of self-confidence and a false sense of self-awareness. They assert they "know" how to live and govern themselves in society in the way that's best and then they make the mistake of thinking they can speak for everyone. Some people are easily aroused.

If these viewers see ONE Maury episode, which has and continues to feature hundreds of irate and promiscuous couples in their teens and twenties, they'll realize how chaotic life can become when you have no self-control with sex.
Teenage pregnancy is a serious problem. Then babies who aren't being properly cared for is even worse.
We know the complications of violence, and sadly the same young generation has rebuttals and complaints against adults who want to reduce our exposure to violence given through movies, videogames etc (OP might actually agree).
But let's not underestimate the complications sex can have.

Yah know...I'm not really sure...I'm the kind of person who'd rather watch a person bleeding there guts out..then watch people have sex..Like I would rather watch a Gory torture scene then a sex torture scene....I just like gore....it doesn't  do anything for me its just entertaining....seeing people naked may not be really that bad but I don't want to be seeing people genitals. Idk why its like that.
parkurtommo's avatar
I guess, my favorite way to justify it, is that bad things are good (in a naughty way, ya know?).  If everything is ok, nothing is a forbidden fruit. It would be boring, no?
Catdogfatness's avatar
It's because we live in a fucked up world that's all.
dualzxz's avatar
Oh yeah. Why shouldn't we show our genitals in public?  It's absurd people wear clothes and hide their goodies...
Sarcasm by the way :stare:
Ficklestix's avatar
Why is that sarcasm? It's actually a good point.
dualzxz's avatar
Well then explain why films are rated 15 if there's nudity in it, and 18 if there's porn
TheLastRavenSoul's avatar
Well, to have a right answer for this question, we should ask someone who censors movies. I didn't get it, too. My opinion is, because porn is normaly... eh disturbing and not very realistic in movies. But well, it's the same with violence, so I don't know.
In my country it's quiet different: everything, doesn't matter if it's violence and porn, will be censored (even it's already for 18 years and up, [but if it's a cartoon, no one will say anything and it's for kids. *hust* Felidae and Princess Mononoke *hust*])
