People who pronounce "chili" instead of "Chile"
Hello, I'm from Chile.
Read that aloud.
Now, tell me you didn't pronounce "Chile" as "chilly".
I'm tired of people pronouncing it like that!
While it is correct pronouncing chile, the spice, like chilly, it is *NOT* correct to pronounce the name of my country, Chile, like that. Unless you're French or were born before 1900.
Okay?!
Do not mix up the name of my country with a damn Mexican spice!
Pronounce it like this: "chee-lay".
Practice with me: "chee-lay".

No me importa.
Woah. I can't imagine just how spoiled you are that THIS is apparently an important and sensitive issue for you.
Accents exist for a reason. Words do not have universal pronunciations, not even names. Leeway is always allowed for accents.
Besides, there's like 10 people in Chile who actually comprehend an ounce of English - so who gives a shit? Really. Go to bed.

Nah, I made this thread months ago and I currently don't give two shits about how people pronounce it.
Y sé que eres chilena, no soy idiota.

Yeah, you totes don't.
I don't see how my nationality is of any relevance.

Chilean people taste like chilly.
Chil-eeeeeeeehhhh--?
hah. I spoke it as Chailei instead. Problem?
I pronounce it right when I'm speaking, but I always think of it as 'chili'
Well, I genuinely apologize. I had absolutely no idea that it's pronounced like that. My geography class did not prepare me for this.
Of course, my geography class taught that Cuba was pronounced "Kyoo-buh" and Puerto Rico was "Por-do Ree-ko," so I suppose I should have known this was coming...
So, I've also been saying it with the emphasis on the first syllable. Is that part still correct, and it's "CHEE-lay," or is it "Chee-LAY"?

It's CHEE-leh.
You know how to pronounce Van Gogh?
Yes, like Vah-n Gug.
But if I pronounce it like that I'll look like a pretentious douche.
You know what's sad?
I've had people correct me when I say Chile correctly. Saying that it's indeed pronounced "Chilly" and not "cheel-lay".

The spice.
That drives me crazy too.
Chilly.
Wow. I actually had a huge crush on a guy I met who was from Chile. I was trying to get into conversation with him and was, the whole time, asking him about what 'chilly' was like. Awkward...
Why didn't I know this earlier? D:

Oh, what is Chile like?
Out goverment is like Springfield's and our pure blue skies are made of smog.
And women and homosexuals tend to be killed often.
Yeah, next time check a dictionary.

... You're talking about Santiago, not Chile.
Lol, you've never been to Chile, have you?
I'm not even from Chile and I get offended when someone pronounces it like the spice. Glad I'm not the only one!
Chilean is like Chillyan, though.
