People who paste generic comments under your deviations

:iconstolensock:
StolenSock Featured By Owner Feb 25, 2013  Student Digital Artist
So I'm pretty sure everyone here has encountered the situation: somebody posts a comment under your deviation. It says nice and totally generic things about your illustration (nice job! congrats! lolz11)and the person doesn't forget to ask you to look at their work and to share it. Then you look at other images the person has commented on and BAM! Sure enough, they are pasting the exact same comment under everything in pursuit of shameless self-promotion.

Apart from this conduct being totally disrespectful to the artist, is it enough to report the user as a spammer? I can't even put it into words how furious this makes me, but I'd like to resolve the situation without being a total glasshole. Any suggestions and/or stories that happened to you?

Generic comments like 'cute', 'cool' etc...not really good enough feedback for me :c
Then again, those are when people ACTUALLY comment...

Perhaps read the comment again. This is not a rant about generic comments. This is a rant about shameless self promotion posing as a comment and the nerve of people who do that.

Hah, I can be very relaxed about my anger, trust me :). And comments that are only self promotion disguised as praise are just rude and disrespectful. Kind of like people who don't wash their hands after they use the bathroom.

I'm not good at critiquing so every one gets a "cool" "good work" kinda generic comment, but i certainly won't ask you to look at my gallery, that's silliness...
I just hate when I do FAV something, and that person asks me to also leave a comment or asks for a Llama...

On another website where I was posting rough drafts of my novel for critique, I had a strict 'don't ask for swaps' policy. Instead I asked people to please leave actual feedback on my story before asking for the same on their own - specifying I wasn't looking for generic 'wow this is horrible' comments but things to help me improve. Someone posted asking for a swap on my wall, and a few seconds later corrected themselves. They posted a generic comment on my story seconds after correcting themselves - the first chapter alone was almost 4000 words. And they apparently read it in seconds. When I made a comment on their own story about a flow problem, they got extremely butthurt and blocked me. 8)

lol I've had people do that, or link to advertise their hope of getting commissions directly on my profile :XD:
"I've opened 5 commission slots! Check it out! *link*"

If they don't have a lot of watchers or traffic I suppose they think they might advertise on someone's page who gets more than they do? It doesn't really irritate me, because I just hide those comments, but I kind of wonder about people who do that lol.

I've gotten notes asking me to check out their stuff, but I can't really recall any on a deviation.

Or maybe I just didn't pay attention.

I don't notice it all that much here, because I don't really frequent dA all that often, but I do notice it on Youtube, when people comment on videos by starting off like: "Hey, this is pretty cool / funny / whatever" and continue by saying: "Please check out my channel too". And most of the time their channel is pretty... Not good, and those comments get downvoted into oblivion.

It's always Call of Duty or Minecraft videos, on an unlicensed recording program, with terrible 12 year old commentary.

This is fact.

My god, gaming videos are the worst. Commentaries by people who a) have a problem to string a coherent sentence together, b) will confess to never playing this mod before so they spend the better part of their video just trying to figure stuff out. Why people think we're interested in their first Half Life 2 gmod playthrough is beyond me. But I digress...

Or those overly boring to listen to people. Some just sound so bored and unenthusiastic about what they're doing, and often have quiet moments. The least they could do is edit some of the most boring parts out.

No consideration in the comment, no fucks given basically. I just tell them thanks, and don't look at their art just because they're a self promoting douchebag. If however, their comment is nice and relevant, I will out of courtesy even if they don't ask me to.

But seriously, how stupid do they think we are? ._.

I think most people don't know what to say, other than "good job". Most of them don't have technical skill or loads of knowledge, or can't pinpoint exactly what they think is wrong, so they prefer to hush.

Well, having nothing to say is not a sin. Actually, I think the world would be a better place if only more people exercised their right to stay silent more often. Not everybody can come up with something constructive above everything they see. Sometimes, people just quietly liking your work can be enough.

Wow, such blatant disrespect. You don't promote yourself by piggybacking on other's works, that's just rude. The response even more so :| What an asshat.

IMO the best way to promote yourself is by networking in your field.
